'William & Mary' 4 Jan 1852 Sydney and/or Newcastle Reel 2136, [4/4790] Page 125; Reel 2463, [4/4927]
AITKEN George 23 and wife - Farm labourer Broughton Edinboro Ch of Scotland Both

George 23 Farm Lab Broughton Edinbro James & Isabella both dead CofS Read & write None

Death 1882/B15290 Aitken George - Robert Aitken - Isabella Borthwick

Toowong Cemetery
Portion 14 Section 6 Grave 26
Aitken George 31 / 12 / 1882 Unknown

No age at death. There is this baptism but if the right one he is not using his middle name.

George Thomson Aitken
Christening Place St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian
Birth Date 9 Feb 1828
Father's Name James Aitken
Mother's Name Isabella Davidson

James Aitken & Isobella Davidson
24 Dec 1816 Saint Cuthberts Edinburgh, Midlothian
Bride's Father: John Davidson
Batch: M119884

So why Borthwick? If Isabella had remarried she would have used her maiden name.

So is the death reg wrong with 'Robert' and with 'Borthwick' ??

8 Jul 1851 St Cuthbert's Edinburgh, Midlothian
Batch: M119903

Brother on same vessel:

Thomas 26 Shepherd Edinbro James & Isabella both dead CofS Read & write None

This looks to be the only death that could fit:

George and Thomas have not been found in 1841 or 1851.

George says he is a farm labourer from Broughton.

I can't find any George who would fit in 1841 or 1851.

Thomas 26 Shepherd Edinbro James & Isabella both dead CofS Read & write No relations in colony

I can't find a Thomas who fits either.

This one does not seem to fit. Not to NE of Edinburgh, probably James & Elizabeth and no brother George.

I can see why you suggested I look at George Aitken

Broughton looks to be an old area and part of the city. Penicuik looks to be 6-7 miles S of the city.

Age is about 5 years out, he could have been b. 1823 and bap. 1828, or it could be the wrong bap. or birth

Find a grave:
George Aitken
Birth: 1823
Penicuik
Midlothian, Scotland
Death: Dec. 30, 1882
Brisbane
Queensland, Australia

Family links:
Spouse:
Janet Cairns Aitken (1833 - 1910)

Children:
John James Aitken (1852 - 1935)*
Janet Cairns Aitken Sherrin (1854 - 1905)*
Isabella Margaret Borthwick Aitken Hardy (1856 - 1927)*
Georgina Annie Aitken Edward (1862 - 1930)*
David Cairns Aitken (1864 - 1940)*
Marion Moffat Aitken Wallace (1870 - 1942)*
Elizabeth Mary Aitken Paillais (1873 - 1903)*

*Calculated relationship

Burial:
Toowong Cemetery
Brisbane
Brisbane City
Queensland, Australia

If you look closely at the age on the image, it looks more like 28y than 23y, so may be a transcription error, if that's the case, it would fit with the 'Find a Grave' record..

Did James marry Isabella Davidson then Isabella Borthwick?

Or is Isabella Davidson not connected?

The crux appears to be Isabella's death.. There are hits on SP, I had a couple of credits left..

15 04/03/1833 AITKEN ISABELLA DAVIDSON / JAMES AITKEN F LEITH SOUTH EDINBURGH CITY CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 692/02 0340 0186

So your theory looks good..

If it is correct, James may have married/cohabited with Isabella B after 1833.

Geoff

EDIT: There are 2 hits for a mar. Aitken = Borthwick, but none from 1833.

Thanks Geoff.

That's the first time I've seen a pre-1855 death index entry like that with the name of the spouse ??

If James married 2x Isabella then it still does not fit. George was born before 1833 so why does his death reg have his nother as Isabella Borthwick?

I've assumed George and Thomas are brothers but death reg in Queensland does not prove that.

There were very few Aitkens in 1841 and 1851 in Midlothian who were farm labourers.

It makes no sense. That is written on the image of the film that is the inspection of the passengers on their arrival. I don't see how that word can be 'Sydney' although they did die in Qld.

Shipping record has both with parents James & Isabella.

What if there were not brothers and fathers could not be brothers either.

Can a Deposit Journal be found for Thomas?
