Hi

If this is the same one, he may well be in New Zealand. The image mentions a date of 1869.

UK, Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1949
Name: G L B Thomas
Campaign or Service: New Zealand
Service Date: 1845-1866
Service Location: New Zealand
Regiment or Unit Name: 1st Battalion 12th Regiment

And this in the 1890 E/R:
Name: George Lifford Barry Thomas
Electoral Year: 1890
District: Waikato
Region or Province: Waikato
[Image says his occupation is a surveyor]

Sorry very late to thank you.
NZ info correct apart from Lyford spelling but dates do not fit, as he was born 1844. He did serve in England as an officer cadet from age 18 to 21 and then I think became a surveyor before coming to NZ. He served in NZ in some capacity so that sort of fits. Cannot find his arrival in NZ. His death cert 1900 says had been in NZ approx. 20 years. Thanks again

Can you give us more information please? Such as when and where he married. If he was married, and married elsewhere besides NZ having his wife's name might help find him on census and passenger lists.

Coromandel was the name of a convict vessel.

Is it also a place name in NZ or the vessel he arrived on around 1880?

Ok a place: Thames-Coromandel District. So that's no help finding his arrival.

Have all his details and family in NZ. and quite a lot about his family in UK. However the period at a young age leaving the army until his arrival in NZ missing. Would he have sat exams in UK to qualify as a Surveyor, and where would that info be found??
The family is on the 1851 census without his father Captain / Rev John Barry Thomas who had died in 1849 having served in the army.
Don't think he had married in England before coming to NZ but very interesting if he had been.
I guess the little search I have been doing on passenger list to NZ have been late 70's early 1880's. Perhaps he came a lot earlier and or called into Australia first. Thank s all
