ARGYLE MARBLE.
We have seen two chimney-pieces at
the houses of Mr. G. Clewett (Statuary),
No. 1, Bathurst-street east ; the price of
one of them is £5, that of the other £10
or £12. The first is a dull greyish mar
ble; the last is very rich, being of many
colours, whitish or grey, brown, red,
green, &c. &c. in spots and veins; very
rich in the colours. It is excessively hard.
We should not be surprised if the parlour
and drawing-room of every house in Syd
ney of any gentility be not, before ten
years are expired, furnished with Argyle
marible chimney pieces. There are great
quantities of marble of this and other
descriptions in various parts of Argyle.
And we should suppose. that chimney
pieces made of it may be wrought in Syd
ney cheaper, than chimney pieces of no
greater beauty, wrought in London and
then imported. Time however will shew.
