George Coneybear dead end!

I am desperate to find birth info for my gr gr grandfather: “ George was born on May 27 1850 in Ashburton Devon, England to William Coneybear and ?” He immegrated to USA around 1874 Where he married Fanny Brooks but I can not locate any firm birth info or parent info for a Mother--any help or suggestions on what to do when you hit a wall?
