Hi Carol, think i have found an answer of sorts...the date of 1944 got me thinking WW2......died in the last year of the war and if the man in this link is him he is buried in Ashford Kent, was in the pioneer corps, aged only 26.
Buried in Bybrook cemetery in Ashford, the pioneer corps were men who did light engineering for the war effort, laying train lines, building hangers...they did a lot of good work and two years after the war the Pioneer corps were renamed Royal Pioneer Corps in recognition of the good work they did.

My GUESS Carol is that he died in an accident or maybe Ashford was hit by bombs....of course this is for you to find out i am only guessing how he died.
99% certain this is him..............hope this may help you get some more info on him.
Married to Minnie who was living in Drighlington at time of his death it seems.
All the best with your research Carol, could be an interesting if very sad story.
Regards,Lee.
Does this help you Dave.....marriage to Minnie?
