Hello Julie,

Thank you very much.

I'd say that totally destroys the possibility that it's the same George H FRENCH, as claimed by some authors of trees, who married in Scotland in 1863:

George H FRENCH & Christina L. ANDERSON
10 Apr 1863 Abercorn, West Lothian, Scotland

Two children born before 1871 and no sign of George with family in any census:

1871
Civil parish Dumfermline Landward
Address Red Row
Christina French head age 29 born Society Linlithgow (W Lothian)
Janet C French dau age 7 born Queensferry Linlithgow
Georgina G dau age 5 born Dunfermline
Janet Anderson mother age 46 ? born Culcross Perth [mother b. abt 1793]
James Anderson brother age 48 born Abercarn Linlithgow occ slater [brother ok]
Regards,

Dave

Hello Julie,

The children's full names are:

Janet Christina Keltie FRENCH b. 9 Nov 1863 Queensferry, W Lothian

Georgina Jane Luter FRENCH b. 2 may 1865 Dunfermline, Fife

Christina's mother was Janet KELTIE so that explains the first one.

There is no Luter that I can see on Christina's side so perhaps Georgina and Luter came from George's side.

Regards,

Dave

Quess what Dave a brother of the George Henry French in Sussex has the middle name of Luter. Also in 1881 there is a Christina Anderson in Broadwater Sussex working as a domestic servant, she does give her place of birth as Kennoway.

Hello Julie,

Yes, I had the 1881 thanks. I didn't have Christina in 1881. EDIT: Yes I do.

This is getting very weird. :D

Christina was born on 11 Dec 1841 in the tiny hamlet of Society not far from Abercorn.

So George finds himself in Abercorn in 1863 where he marries has two children and by 1871 is back with wife #1 in England. ???

Christina had two children with a Carl LEONHARDT - they didn't marry.

Looks as though Janet C K didn't marry:

Death 1907 Janet FRENCH Dunfermline, Fife 1863 +/-1

Nor did her sister:

Death 1884 Georgina Luter FRENCH Dunfermline, Fife 1865 +/-1

Birth: 1871; Limekilns, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland; he is listed as Carl August Anderson or French; witness Christina Anderson, mother; certificate #212

Birth: 1876; North Overgate, Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland; Charlotta Augusta Leonhardt Anderson; illegitimate; mother Christina French M.S. Anderson living at Limekilns, Dunfermline; witness Christina Anderson, mother; certificate #58

Regards,

Dave

Hello Julie,

Kennoway is not near Abercorn so that is a different one. Oh. I found her:

1881
Civil parish Borrowstounnes
County West Lothian
Address North Street
Adam Sands head age 50 occ fisherman born Dunfermline
Ann wife age 49 born Abercorn
Jane Eliza Sands dau age 19 occ dressmaker born Boness, Linlithgowshire
Christina Lind Anderson sister in law age 39 sailors wife born Abercorn
Using the name ANDERSON.

The marriage is near where she was born and it has the middle initial L.

George H FRENCH & Christina L. ANDERSON
10 Apr 1863 Abercorn, West Lothian

How can it be possible with Peter and George born abt 1864 and 1866 in Worthing?

Georgina Jane Luter. George's mother's name is Jane and father is Thomas:

I think it may be a wild goose chase, as there is another George H French with different parents anyway, which I think now is the George from the 1861/71 census..

George wanted a son. :D

With the name Georgina Jane Luter how can it not be connected to the Sussex family?

George must have made a few 'business' trips to Scotland.

I wonder what the 1863 marriage record might have on it. I've had very mixed results with marriages I've paid to view. One told me their names were proclaimed THREE times. That's all I got.

So you think the George baptised 1837 West Wittering, Sussex is not the one with spouse Clara even though the age fits. The census says born Worthing. Not nearby.

Deaths Sep 1889
French George Henry 52 E. Preston 2b 205

Which one is that one?

Hi,

This is getting confusing. On the National Archives Kew, Seamans Register there is a George Henry French born 9 Oct 1837 West Wittering. George French with parents Thomas and Jane place of birth is given as West Wittering. There is another George H French with parents Peter and Sarah who I think is the one who married Clara. Phew

George French in 1871 is in Naples in 1871, middle initial D but I sure he is the same one as his pob is West wittering year abt 1838. The downside he is classed as single.

Hello Julie,

That makes sense re the two places of birth. Census place 1861-1881 - Broadwater:

name: George Henry French
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 18 Sep 1836
baptism/christening place: Broadwater, Sussex, England
birth date:
birthplace:
death date:
name note:
race:
father's name: Peter French
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Sarah French
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: C02257-6
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 1068505
reference number: item 1 p 149

Also, being a seaman explains not being in some census. Can you see the George born West Wittering in 1841 or 1851 or 1861.

Can we work out which one died in 1889? Ha. Broadwater is in E Preston RD. :)

Regards,

Dave

Hello Julie,

Thanks. At sea or in Scotland.

That makes some sense now. Lucky the middle name Luter did help.

I can't see a death for my George. It's possible he didn't die in UK.

Regards,

Dave
