George Pearce is my wife's maternal Grandfather, other than the 1911 census and his marriage to a Bertha Gertrude Harley in 1898 I can find no trace of him or his wife. I do know when they both died, George in 1946 and Bertha in 1953 (have found records for these). George's mother's name was Jane (sorry no maiden name). I have a possible match for Bertha in the 1891 census, but have nothing to confirm it.

Hi,

First of all I Googled Chartridge to find out where it was. I presume that you are looking at Chartridge in Buckingham. If you are there is a web site for Chartridge village www.chartridge.org.uk

A search for Pearce came up with entries for a family living there in 1881, so I checked the 1881 Census and this is the family.

RG11/1451/F96A/p21

Jesse Pearce 31 Labourer Gt Missenden
Ann 33 wife Chesham
Alice 8 dau Kimble
Jane 5 dau Chesham
George 3 son Chesham

Could this be your family?

The only way to get confirmation of anything prior to their marriage is to purchase a copy of the marriage certificate which will give you the names and occupations of their fathers' and then you may be able to identify their births and the families on earlier census. As the name George Pearce (or its possible alternative spellings) is so common, I would not attempt to trace it without that knowledge.
The only possible marriage that I can see in 1898 is of a George Pearce and Bertha HARLEY in Amersham, Bucks. June 1898, volume 3a, page 1195, so it appears that you may have her name incorrect.
There is a birth in the Aylesbury district, Dec. Quarter 1877 of a Bertha Gertrude Harley, volume 3a, page 575. In 1891 I can see a 15 year old Bertha Harley living at Swan Lane, Wendover, Bucks, with parents William & Jane. The marriage certificate will confirm if her father is William and the birth certificate will give both parents' names and her mother's maiden name.

All what we've found looks positive, as all the areas mentioned are close.

Me being a Bucks born boy, I can see these results as a good possibility. But certs need to be ordered to confirm.

He could also pop as being born in Chesham, Amersham as well as Chartridge.

Thanks for the input folks. Just to confirm Geroge's wife's maiden name IS Harley not Hanley typo on my part redf).

Emeltee, I don't think that is George's family in the 1881 census as my wife's mother recorded births and deaths in a book that we have and there is no mention of an Alice or Jane Pearce.

Thanks again

Dave

PS Will be ordering marriage cert

Steve,
Many thanks for all this info including the PM. I had found some of the people you mention but not all of the details you did.

The PM you sent me has thrown up a mystery. My wife does not recall her mother ever mentioning the death of a sibling.
Looks like another case for M. Hercule Poirot to solve!!

Thanks again Steve:):):)

Hi Dave.

Let me know if I can help any more, and who was the sibling that may have died. Perhaps I can find out for you.

I have most parish regs. on disc, for the areas mentioned from the 1530's to 1901, dependant on the parish.

Give me a shout if I can help.O0

I'm reasonably sure his parents are Charles & Mary Anne Pearce.

In 1881 census, George Pearce's age is given as 15, but it looks like 18 to me, and p.o.b is Chesham,(Chartridge).

Father, Charles Pearce is in Prison in 1881.

Wendover Marriage.

Wendover baptism.

4 Oct 1846 - Charles, child of James & Ann Pearce of Wendover, Labourer.

Hi Steve
I wonder what Charles did to be a guest of Her Majesty??
Poaching??
Would there be anything in old newspapers?
Not many warders listed.
Perhaps they all worked on the land as lots of ag labs etc.

Hi Dave.

AMERSHAM marriage.

15 May 1826. by Banns

Amersham burials.

24 Mar 1879 - Moses PEARCE aged 76 of Amersham Common.
25 Sep 1880 - Frances Pearce, aged 75 of Amersham Common.

This Moses appears to be born c1802. Great Missenden, in 1851. Wife Frances/Francis/Fanny Pearce, appears to be born c1806. Chesham Bois, Bucks.

In 1871 Census, this Moses Pearce(c1802), then shows being born Amersham, although no baptism exists there for him.

1841 census. Amersham.

Moses Pearce 35
Fanny Pearce 35
Esther Pearce 13

Hannah Pearce 6
Mary Pearce 4
Susannah Pearce 2

1851 census. Amersham.

Moses Pearce 48
Francis Pearce 45
David Pearce 20
Hannah Pearce 16
Mary Pearce 14**
Susannah Pearce 11**
Joshua Pearce 7
George Pearce 5
Sarah Pearce 1

**.Baptised in Amersham.

PLUS - Baptism -12 Oct 1851. Eliza, daughter of Moses & Fanny PEARCE of Amersham Common, Labourer, adult.

All children born Amersham, Bucks.

=================================================================

There are a few trees that get the 2 'Moses' families mixed up.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Who I think is YOUR Moses Pearce(Peirce), in the 1841 Census, appears in the same household as Jacob & Eleanor(Nellie) Pearce.

Living in Wendover, Bucks.

Jacob Peirce 65
Eleanor Peirce 60
Elizth Peirce 20
Moses Peirce 40
Ann Peirce 45

Hannah Peirce 12

Eleanor Peirce 1
=====================================

Wendover burials.
