My Great Grandfather was George Ruthven born abt 1816. According to family lore he came to South Africa as part of the 1820 Settlers. The only Ruthven reference I can find is of a Mrs RM Ruthven with 3 children and maybe a brother named William who came as part of Lieut. Richard Daniell's private party aboard the "Duke of Marlborough" that left Portsmouth in March 1820 and arrived in Cape Town South Africa June 1820. Can anyone help with info regarding the childrens names etc. Thankyou Arthur Brown

On the igi for the British Isles births/christening (www.familysearch.org) there is a George William Ruthven christened 10-11-1816 St. Clement Danes London, father George Thomas Joseph Ruthven mother Mary Ann. I could'nt find any other children for this couple.

Hi Julie,
Thanx for your effort. From info since found in South Africa it would seem that George's father was named William born in London about 1787. George had a brother also named William born 1813, and another brother named John (details unknown). His other brothers & sisters was born in South Africa so I do not expect you to find any info on them.
Regards
Arthur

Hello Arthur,

Found a John Ruthven born 17-2-1814 Lying in Hospital, Endell St, Holborn London, parents William and Kitty-William Ruthven born 25-4-1812, christened 30-4-1812 same hospital and parents. The nearest to William Ruthven 1787 was a William Rutven christened 1784 Suffolk father James mother Hannah Newson.
