Hi everyone,

I've recently come across a great, great, great grandmother who was born in Berlin, Germany. She immigrated to London, I assume, between 1881 and 1891 as she does not appear on the 1881 Census but does on the 1891.

I would really appreciate help on finding out more about her.

Her name is Ann (or Annie) Fannon - b. abt 1863, Berlin.

Married William Fannon in London (no dates or places I'm afraid)

I have no information on parents either but she had the following children :
William Fannon
Annie Fannon
James Fannon

I would particularly like any info that can be found about her time in Germany before she moved to England.

Thanks for any help :)

Hi :)
Without a maiden name it will be very difficult to trace Annie in Germany.
My suggestion is to order a birth cert for one of the children, you will then get her maiden name.
Annie Flora C Fannon 1st qtr 1885 Lambeth Greater London
Volume 1d page 368

You can order online, at the moment certs 7quid, price going up very soon.

Hi oznannie,

Thanks for your help. Is that Annie Flora C Fannon my Annie Fannon? I haven't come across any middle names for her so am not sure :S

If not, how do I go about finding the right certificate for the right person?

Sorry, I'm a complete novice at ordering certificates, my research is primarily internet- based at the moment :)

Thank,

Ryan

Hi Ryan
Thanks for reply:)
It looks like I have the wrong Annie, my sincere apols.(can't find a blushing smiley!)
I've just looked at 1891 census and she's only 4 yrs old.
"W" 6 & James 2.
There's a birth in 1887 (using Free BMD)
for Annie Mary C St.George's East vol 1c page 364
This is the district they were living in in 1891.
In Free BMD there's also a birth for
William Henry T Fannon march qtr 1885 St George's East 1c 375
Can't find little James.
I'm guessing you have parents & Wm jr in 1901 as Fannan?
Still no luck with James.
As for Annie jr??
Is she an inmate at an Industrial School?

Hi Oznannie,

I don't know whether she was in an Industrial School, but I had a look myself and to my knowledge no one in our family ever went into anything like that.

I think I'm going to go along the path of William Henry Thomas Fannon. I have the most info on him as he is my great grandfather (added one too many 'greats' in my original post) and am directly related to him.

He was born 28th December, although some records have mentioned March  1884 in Tower Hamlets (which I think, from previous researching, is St George in the East area) and he married Mary Elizabeth Goss (if that's any help)

I've just looked at the 1901 census as I'm writing this and William appears on it at age 16 with both parents, but James and Annie are not. I assume that they were victims of infant mortality or perhaps you were right and Annie ended up in an Industrial School.

I'm sorry for the sheer length of this reply lol Would I be able to find William's birth certificate?

Thanks for any help :)

Ryan

Believe it or not nannie, I can't find the 1891 entry for Charlote Ritchley.

But, I may have stumbled on something else.

Living in Tottenham 1891.

Henrick Rietschel. 40. b.Saxony, Germany.
Caroline Rietschel 34. b. London.
Julius Rietschel 13. b. Dulwich.
Doris Rietschel 10. b. Brixton.
Leopold Rietschel 9. b. Saxony, Germany.
Otto Rietschel 5. b. Tottenham.

Could Ritchley be an anglacised version of Rietschel.
Food for thought.:)

Hi Steve
Rietschel..certainly worth keeping for later perhaps.
Here's 1891
3 Godard? Court, St Geo in the East
it lists surname first
Ritchley, Charlotte wid 51 charwoman bn Germany
Elizabeth 23? single dom serv bn London
Ernest 14 bn London.
2 Lodgers.
Death for Charlotte the following year, aged 52.
Charlotte would be the right age to have a child in 1863 in Germany, then moved to UK where the two above were born?
No luck with 1881.
If the marriage is correct, why did they marry after the kiddies were born?
It's a puzzle for sure:rolleyes:

Just perhaps they met and married in Germany, and remarried again in England.
Maybe it was for legal or other reasons, who knows.

Also, if you look at the other Reitschel family I found, there is a child that's born in Germany, in between those born in England.
So they must have gone gone back and then returned from Germany.

I'm sure Ryan will enjoy untangling this.:)

Hi Steve and Oznannie,

Thank you so much for all your help!

A lot to digest. I saw Charlotte Ritchely when I looked at the marriage certificate but didn't think much of it. Going to be difficult determining what actually happened here.

Is there any particular reason why they would have come to England at that time - persecution or some sort of poverty. Or just felt like it?! lol

I actually ordered a birth certificate from The General Register Office (or something like that) for a William Henry Thomas Fannon that most matched what I had for him and is supposed to be dispatched monday, so watch this space. Waiting to see if the maiden name is Rietschel now lol. If not, only £7 - not too extortionate. :)

Hi Ryan,

Could be no end of reasons why they come to England, I remember watching a WDYTYA prog.
And there was a reason for the exodus of some Germans, but for the life of me, I cannot think why, nor which celebrity it was.

Good luck with the cert. Fingers X'd.

Your post 17th March, you said you had looked at the marriage certificate..
Was that correct or did you mean the Rego.
Please clarify?

Hi oznannie,

Sorry, I could have sworn I'd already replied to this. Erm, I looked at the actual marriage certificate online. Not sure what rego. means -sorry, not abbreviation literate! :p

Just as a little update, the birth certificate I ordered never arrived - no such person existed with the details I gave! lol .

This could be the birth registration, looks like William was baptised before his birth was registered.

Birth/1885

William Henry T Fannon
Jan/Feb/Mar 1/4
District St George in the East
Vol 1c
Page 376

The page number has been transcribed as 375 by Ancestry but definately looks like 376.

Just noticed these details have already been posted.
