On arrival in Australia on 19 Dec 1830 on the Burrell, this man, possibly born 1802, stated he was already married, and was refused permission to marry at Maitland NSW on 3 Dec 1839. He later married my great great grandmother Catherine Donovan in Australia in 1844. I would love to know to whom he was married in Scotland.
Cheers,

Hi Maryc2

I have searched the Scottish records on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and could not find anything at all.

I searched from 1819 - 1830, with just the Muir surname and no Gilbert marriage came up at all.

Sorry that this is of no help to you

Maddie
Thanks Maddie. I'm grateful that someone else has had a look for me on Scotlands People in case I have missed.
Cheers,

There are 3 Gilbert Muir marriages in Scotland on the IGI between November 1825 and September 1827.

Gerard
Thanks Gerard,
I clean forgot about the IGI once I drew a blank on the Scottish site. If I can find out more about Gilbert, I may obtain a better picture of his Irish wife Catherine Donovan's movements also. On with the show.
Cheers,
Maryc2

Hi there,
You could try this link and see if its any help if you havent seen it already. there is a email address on there that i emailed once and they were very helpful and sent me further info that i didnt have on a convict rellie. I did a search in the link and your Gilbert is in there. Dont know if they would have anything about his first marriage but could be worth a try and see what they have.

Hi Gibbo,
Thanks for the link to Hunter Valley genealogy. Yes, Gilbert Muir was a convict in the Maitland area in 1830 and I have found his CF, plus numerous mentions in the digitised newspapers of Maitland Mercury and Sydney Morning Herald. Will look a bit deeper into Scotland. Was surprised to learn elsewhere that only 4.8% of convicts were Scottish.
Cheers,
Maryc2
