Glebe Stree Burmantofts Leeds

Is anyone a bit of an expert on Leeds Yorkshire please?

My Gt Gt Grandmother Martha Coultas was married from a house in Glebe St Leeds on 31 December 1871, although she lived in Bradford. She married James Wells whose address on the marriage certificate was also Glebe St Leeds (what was going on there?) and he also lived and worked in Bradford. Both of them were with respective parents in the 1871 census and both in Bradford.

James brother Henry married Martha's sister Sarah and they lost 3 babies whose death certificates were registered in Leeds, although they also both lived in Bradford. One little boy died of complications from Spina Bifida and he died age 1 month at 12 Glebe Street Leeds. Can anyone pour any light on why they would be in Leeds at these important times? I can't find a single relative who lived there at the time. I've found the house on Google maps and it just seems to be a residence, so I'm really puzzled as to why they would all go to Leeds for major life events!!!! It's so frustrating!

Hi Jill
It used to be a reqirement that the bride and groom lived in the area they married for so long before the marriage. Often they used the address of a friend or relative, so that they could say they lived there. However in your case I think the reason may be different
It could be that Martha was already pregnant and went away from her home 'to hide the shame', or that the marriage was frowned upon, James not good enough or something. You would think there must be some connection to the address for both Martha and Sarah to use it.
Burmantofts is an area close to the city centre, and contains one of the city's main hospitals, St James. (funnily enough, it is known as Jimmys after Jimmy saville who used to visit the children there). Your family seemed to have had a lot of problems with their children and it could be that they also used the address to be close to the hospital.
Have you found Martha in 1881? Did she or Sarah move to Leeds when they married, and was it their address

Hi Dave,

Sorry to be so late in replying and thanks so much for your help on this. I'm not sure but Betty could be the clue here. Ann Coultas nee Austing/Asting/Astin depends on which record you view, was Martha and Sarah's Mother. She had a sister called Betty, but I'm not sure if the age fits or not. Ernest was the name of one of Henry and Sarah's babies who died and was a family name that got handed down the family lines for a couple of centuries. I'll see if I can find a DOB for Betty!

I didn't realise that Tong was so close to Leeds, thanks for that. I don't know about Martha being pregnant. Their first child was Obiah ELizabeth b.1875 quite some time later and my Gt Grandma Harriet Ann was born in May 1877, 2 months after James died age 31. I wonder if they were there for an illness he may have had. I've ordered his death certificate today, maybe that may give a clue.

The age for Betty doesn't really add up as she shows as 15 year old on the1841 census, which is the only one I can find her on. She seems to have married someone younger though in any case which could mean she lied about her age.

Ann, Martha and Sarah's Mother died that same year, 1871 after "decline 2 years certified". Maybe she was also attending the hospital! Oh for a family who left behind their diaries/memoires!

Thanks Lee, yes I keep in touch with John Wells and this is a great site. I have my Wells tree posted on here. It's made up of lots of private trees, so you have to be cautious, but useful to see the links across the country of the Wells family!
