Probably this one - Eldwick = Ettrick

Agnes Scott
Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
birth: 30 Nov 1843
christening: 29 Mar 1844 , ETTRICK, SELKIRK, SCOTLAND
residence: 1843 Ettrick, Selkirk, Scotland
parents: William Scott, Agnes Proudfoot
James Glendinning
Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
birth: 12 Jun 1831
christening: 17 Jun 1831 , MOUSEWALD, DUMFRIES, SCOTLAND
residence: 1831 Mousewald, Dumfries, Scotland
parents: David Glendinning, Janet Ferguson

So, did James die in Scotland or did he arrive before the family?

Also, if I have the right baptisms then I expected to see sons named David and William. No sign of a David. First two daughters fit as Agnes and Janet. If David was the first he would have been born before the marriage.

Ooops! He's a seaman... redf)

Edit: could still be related..
Thanks Geoff.

1831 fits with age in 1871 so I think that is the right baptism for James senior.

I can't find a birth for a son James.

Neither death in Ryerson so no quick way to get age at death.

Can't see a notice in TROVE for James senior.

The Sydney Morning Herald - Monday 3 September 1923 p.8
GLENDENNING.-September 2, 1923, at a private hospital Penrith, and of Perkins-road, Rooty Hill, Agnes, relict of the late James Glendenning, aged 78 years.

A tree has the arrival for James as 1886 but no vessel named.

It also suggests son William was born before the marriage. No mention of a son David born before William.
NSW - Assisted..
Agnes Glendenning

James Glendenning.
We regret to have to record the
death at his late residence, Rooty
Hill, on Saturday morning last (28th
inst.), at about quarter past twelve, of
Mr James Glendenning, a venerable
and highly esteemed resident of Rooty
Hill and well known throughout the
Nepean and Parramatta districts. The
late Mr Glendenning was a native of
Dumfrieshire, Scotland, and had at-
tained the patriarchial age of 87 years
—the date of his birth being 12th
June, 1829
. Mr Glendenning, who
had been connected with the sheep
breeding industry in England, Wales
and Scotland since his boyhood, came
to Australia with his eldest son in
, his family's place of residence
at the time being 'Subdury,'' near
Harrow, England ...

... The interment was in the Presbyterian portion of Rooty Hill General Cemetery,
on Sunday afternoon last, Rev. Geo. Milne officiating. Mr. J. T. Huxley had charge of the funeral arrangements.

12 June 1831 :D

A very long article. :)

One tree says 1886 and that says 1887.

One tree says he died on 29th and that says 28th.

Maybe this is him, perhaps cost effective to travel as a crewman!

One of the trees has a John Sprootfoot Scott Glendinning b.1867 Ruthwell..

John, Robert and Walter are on the same ship but appear to be travelling apart from the others

John Glendinning
Port of Departure: London
Port of Arrival: Sydney, New South Wales
Voyage Arrival Date: 16 Sep 1889
Vessel Name: Oroya

Oh! They are unassisted...

Perhaps not as crew, Geoff.

William is not on the 1889 list so he arrived with William.

One tree has William b. 1863 not 1865.
