how can i find out if my grandfather was in the first world war? I have no family alive now to ask. Just want to check for my records.

Good morning Sterico,
Thanks for getting back to me. My Grandfathers name was ALBERT (BERT) CLARKE. He was born 1892 in Oadby Leicestershire. He died october 1965. I think if he was in the war he would have been in the Army.

Hi Horobin,

Have you Alberts parents names ,or if he married his wifes name (the next of kin will be listed on the service papers). There are a few Alberts Clarkes with service records from Leicestershire. Post the info and will have a look.

Hi Horobin,

The Albert Clarke born abt 1891 shows next of kin as mother Sarah.

Albert Clarke born abt 1887 residence New Street Oadby gives next of kin as wife Evelyn nee Ward children Alfred born 28 Feb 1914 and Winifred Alice born 15 May 1909.

The other Albert Clarke born abt 1877 a bit to early.

Nothing showed up for Bert Clarke on the service records. Though they could be amomgst the burnt records, so if he's not there dosnt mean he didnt service in WW1.

Pity about the burnt records, i would have liked to have known, should have asked questions when I was younger I suppose.
