grandfather

hello everyone .. i am having a problem finding information regarding my grandfather
his name was joseph frederick steel
i have his marraige certificate
he married CATHERINE BRIDGET CAVANAGH in newcastle upon tyne on 19 june 1919 at st andrews roman catholic church
according to the certificate he was 28 yrs old

i also have his death certificate
he died 1952 last qtr
his son was the informant his age was down as 78 yrs old

i can't find a birth entry for him..
have no idea what area he was from all i know is his father was george steel bootmaker

on his marraige certificate his occupation was ex army / labourer
any ideas where to start looking would be appreciated...

Which information do u feel is more accurate, because according to the marriage cert. he would have been born abt 1891 and according to death abt would be 1874, that is 17 years.
