Does not help. John could be anywhere in 1841. Well before the 1848 marriage.

Interesting that John is described as a smith on his marriage but a machine maker on the ship's manifest. Good to know he was practising his trade in London.

I couldn't find any John Gray in 1841 in Scotland that fit. Or a Sarah Mumby anywhere ...

I think I found Isabel(la) Gray nee Landreth's death:

Isabella Gray, Jedburgh
Age not known
Died by her clothes catching fire (!)
