Great Grandfather - Any help would be much appreciated

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I’m fairly new to this genealogy game (a couple of months). Here is my first major snag:

I have the marriage certificate for my paternal grandfather’s parents. Here are the details

Date: 30th March 1907
Place: St. Andrew's Church, Minley, Hampshire, England
Groom: Walter James Horne Edwards | 26 | Bachelor | Electrician | Minley
Bride: Laura Maud Watts | 24 | Spinster | / | Minley
Groom’s Father: John James Edwards | Deceased
Bride’s Father: James Watts | Farmer

My problem is that I am unable to find any records at all for [Walter James Horne Edwards] other that marriages, I have checked births, deaths and censuses until I went boss-eyed. I would be very appreciative if anyone with a bit more experience could give me some hints as to how I can find out some information about him.

I don’t believe that ‘Horne’ is usually used as a given/middle name. I thought that as his father is listed as ‘deceased’, his mother may have remarried to someone with the surname ‘Horne’ which he put before the Edwards. Or maybe the opposite?? Despite extensive searching, I haven’t found anything in the records to support this theory.

Please help me ><. Of all the lines that I am currently researching, this is the one that I am most eager to trace as it is the one that carries my surname -_-"

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Based on his age at marriage, that would make Walter's birth year approximately 1881 (if he was telling the truth about his age), I checked 1880 to 1882 and found the following births:

Walter James Edwards born April/May/June Qtr 1880 Chelsea 19 363
Walter James Edwards born July/Aug/Sept Qtr 1880 St Thomas 5b 77
Walter James Edwards born Jan/Feb/Mar Qtr 1881 Hendon 3a 164
Walter James S Edwards born Jul/Aug/Sept Qtr 1881 Greenwich 1d 964

Would it be possible for you to write to the Registrars for the above areas to find out which one (if any) might be yours? My local registrars are really helpful. If i'm faced with a few possiblities (as per the above), I give them the information I already have, ie father's name, and they search the records to see if the information matches up. If they find the correct one it costs me £7; if they can't find it then they simply return my cheque.

I'm afraid I haven't had time to look at the census returns as yet. (or do the dishes come to that ;) )

Will check on this later to see if anyone else has been able to help at all.

Kind Regards
Bex:)

Another thought... When naming children it was quite often the done thing to give a child the mother's maiden name as a middle name. So you may find that John James Edwards married a Miss Horne. Of course, it doesn't always work this way, but sometimes it's a very helpful clue. :)

I don't know whether or not he had any siblings.

I had seen this census record before but I could not find any bith records to verify whether or not this was the correct Walter.

I'll keep on looking. Thanks for the help.

Let me know if you think of anything else :)

Here may be another census that you might want to check out further, only because I also after using the mothers name, I looked up her first name then using the Horne that you were not sure of where it was from and found a louisa Horne born abt 1851 that would fit in approximate age of this Walters mother. If this census was your ggrandfather.

I realise that this is an old thread, but wondered what the witness names were please? sometimes the witness names can be the key to solving problems..
