Hello,

This is a long shot. I'm looking for the birth somewhere in the world of a Walter Scott GRIFFITHS -born 1864 +/- 1 year perhaps - parents unknown. He became a town planner in Australia but no sign of him on shipping records yet.

I'm wondering if this GRIFFITHS family can be found in 1871:

John b. ?
spouse Temperance b. ?
son Walter b. 1864

Thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Steve,

Thank you very much. It was a 50/50 :D chance you would find that couple given this:

Marriages Dec 1859
Griffiths John Newport M 11a 245 ***
Morgan Maria Newport M 11a 245
Sainsbury James Newport M 11a 245
Scott Temperance Newport M 11a 245 ***

I know this is way out of Fenway Park
= 'left field' - about a 1 in 100,000 chance probably that Walter was their son.

I know very little about Walter and was guessing from his middle name that his mother's name was SCOTT.

An obituary of a town planner, W. Scott-Griffiths, is in the Observer,
23 March 1929, page 20d.
He died in Australia in 1929 and was born in 1864. I found these:

Births Jun 1864
GRIFFITHS Walter Dudley 6c 141
GRIFFITHS Walter Llanelly 11a 651

Births Sep 1864
GRIFFITHS Walter Cardiff 11a 212

so I thought it was a possibility he was from Wales. I can't find a bio or any info re his parents. I wish people who know the year of an event would also mention the place.

He was in Australia by 1899 when he married but I can't find him in shipping records. His death reg does not mention place of birth or parents although a full copy of the death certificate might.

He appears as W. Scott / Walter S. / Walter Scott GRIFFITHS and Walter SCOTT-GRIFFITHS.

He was a town planner so it's possible his father was also or described as an architect, surveyor, or draftsman. I still believe he was born in UK.

I've gone through the 1881 UK census for a Walter GRIFFITHS born anywhere 1864 +/- 2 years and nothing stands out.

Regards,

Dave

Hello Steve,

It may not be Wales or even UK but so far I can't find his birth in Australia.

More 'official' sites have his name as Walter SCOTT-GRIFFITHS.

His papers are in the NLA:

http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/1748068

"Development of the area was well advanced by early August 1928 and Mr. Scott-Griffiths congratulated those responsible,..."

How sure :2fun: +/- 1 year probably:

COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA DESIGN FOR THE LAY-OUT OF
DESIGN OF THE FEDERAL CITY OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA.

Scott Griffiths, Robert C. Coulter, and Charles Casswell
The Public Service Journal 13 (June 15, 1912).

W. Scott Griffiths( 1863-1929)
I wish I knew for sure I should be searching for family name = GRIFFITHS and that he just used his second given name Scott rather than Walter.

I have 1863 and 1864 now

Regards,

Dave

Hello Steve,

How could it be that the National Library of Australia who holds his papers can get his birth date wrong? Perhaps this is his birth in NSW after all:

1274/1863 GRIFFITHS Given names = WALTER S - parents = JOHN G LUCY M - RD= SYDNEY

Regards,

Dave

Hello Steve,

I made an assumption his middle name Scott was his mother's name and knowing that GRIFFITHS are in Wales and finding a marriage in Wales that could fit we went from there.

It's possible he was born in Sydney after all in 1863. :2fun:

Regards,

Dave

Hello Steve,

This does not add up:

The Sydney Morning Herald - Thursday 19 February 1863
BIRTHS
GRIFFITHS - February 3rd, at her residence, 353, Bourke street, Surry Hills, the wife of W.S. Griffiths, of a son.

1274/1863 GRIFFITHS WALTER S - JOHN G LUCY M - SYDNEY

Solution:

356/1863 GRIFFITHS RICHARD M - WILLIAM S MARY A A - SYDNEY

Only the one birth appears in the newspaper.

Regards,

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Of course :2fun: you found this first:

Father Name: John Griffiths (occupation: City Missionary)

Thanks. Yes, that looks likely.

I can't see Walter's parents deaths in NSW as John George and Lucy Maria but several John G and one Lucy M.

The John G is not the one who died in Manly, NSW in 1857. "John G Griffiths was the first licensee of the Pier Hotel, Manly. He was born in Shropshire, England, and became an actor and theatrical manager..."

It was one way for me to fill in my morning by looking in Wales. :D

Regards,

Dave
