Does anyone know if a child was baptised 1n 1844 in Woolvercot Oxford why there appears to be no entry in the GRO Index. Henry Bustin born 3 August 1844, I need to send for his birth certificate to confirm his mothers maiden name. Thanks.

According to an article by the Society of Genealogists, although birth registration was introduced in 1837 it was not made compulsory to register a birth until 1874. Therefore it is possible that Henry's birth was not registered.

Seems to be at least two Bustin families with birth registrations in RD Woodstock.

One in 1838 with no mmn on GRO.

Other mmn ROBINSON & BUSBY - have not found either marriage

Have not yet found another with HITCHCOX.

Absolutely correct, 1875 was the magic year.. Also a clamp down on school attendance using the 1870 education act.. Busy time in the 1870's..

Found one of the two

Marriages Jun Qtr 1844
BUSBY Jane Woodstock 16 235
BUSTIN Richard Woodstock 16 235

Richard and Jane and children are in 1851.

Another Bustin family in Woolvercot in 1851 is Thomas and wife Sophiah and children.

Also a Sophia Bustin granddau aged 9 with some Robinsons.

Damn FS for 1851 no longer shows the household with all the details.

Where is Henry in 1851?

Henry has his name abbreviated to HY and they are living with Thomas's Mother Elizabeth Bustin a coal merchant in Woolvercot entry No 11 in the cesus of 1851, I am attempting to confirm Thomases wife Sophiah's maiden name as there appear to be two schools of thought one Roberson the other Constable. I cannot find Sophiah and Thomas's Marriage which I think took place sometime between 1838 (I have the feeling that Charles was born illagitamate but I think they were married by 1841. I cannot find Thomas or Sophiah in 1841 and Charles is with his mothers parents.

Thank you
Gwenyth

There is a marriage for a Thomas Bustin/Sophia Constable Mar 1852 Oxford 3a 637.

Strange because in the 1851 Census they are down as married.

I have a feeling this is another family as the marriage took place in Oxford and there if another Thomas Bustin from Oxford. I have a Parish record of a Sophia Roberson having an illegitimate child in 1838 and the age of the child Charles ties in with his age in 1841 with Sophia's parents and with Thomas's parents in 1851. both of these records are from Woolvercot.

No forename..

If this is Sophia [Roberson] it may suggest they were married by 1848

I have just been going over the marriage records for Wolvercote and found a record for the marriage of Will Roberson and Hannah Wren on 4 November 1839 the witnesses were Thos Bustin and Sophia Roberson which ads to my theory that my gt gt grandfathers wifes maiden name was Roberson.:)

Hi Geoff

Just had notification of a refund from GRO as the record does not match the details of name so it looks like this was not my family. so back to the search for Sophia and Thomas's marriage and Henry's birth certificate, on the parish record it looks as though they had married by the time henry was christened in 1844.

Thanks Gwenyth

I am sorry, Gwenyth looked very promising too.
