Hi

The marriage record on DaveHam's post for Nora Haggis is a translators error and is a red herring.
Haggis was the entry before but was Eliza not Norah.

I have followed Norah through the census records from her marriage to 1911
Her birthplace was given as Accrington (near Blackburn) on all years. She had 5 children with George, only James was alive in 1911 acc to the census. The children who sadly died were George, Elizabeth, Martha and possibly Nora

Marriage: 3 Jul 1880 St Peter, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
George Arkwright - 21, fireman, Bachelor, 69 Chapel St.
Nora Hagin - (X), 25, Spinster, 69 Chapel St.
Groom's Father: James Arkwright, joiner
Bride's Father: Derias Hagin, labourer
Witness: James Arkwright, (X); Catherine Hagin, (X)
Married by Banns by: John B. Holden curate
Register: Marriages 1874 - 1891, Page 121, Entry 242

I'm wondering if I've found the family with the name transcribed differently or is it another family? All the pieces have not fallen into place yet.

Haslingden is the right registration district for Accrington (Old and New).

It took some time. :)

Accrington is in Whalley Parish but that parish spans four registration districts. I eventually found them searching Haslingden.

Still a few unanswered questions.

I would think the enumerator has written it as heard. Literacy and dialect among the population was also another problem.

How many times have you been asked to spell your name or surname, whilst on the phone, or otherwise.

My own surname, being of 4 letters, still get written wrongly on my snail mail.
