Hope the following is helpful. The GRO marriage details should enable you to obtain Hannah's marriage certificate which should give her fathers name and the GRO death details her death certificate which should show who registered the death to confirm this is the right person

1844 Hannah Collister marries Stephen Johnston marriage registered in Cockermouth, Cumberland in the Jan to March quarter 1844 GRO Index Volume 25 Page 73

1851 Census

Johnstons In Dearham, Cumberland – census states that they were all born Dearham
Stephen age 30 and his wife Hannah age 33 and their children John (8 ), Margaret (7), Tom (5), Janet (3), Sarah (2) and Stephen (10 months)
Stephen is an engineman

1861 Census

Johnstons In Great Broughton , Cumberland – census states that Stephen b. Workington , Hannah b. Whitehaven and all the children were all born Dearham
Stephen age 40 and his wife Hannah age 43 and their children John (18 ), Thomas (15), Janet (13), Sarah (12) , Stephen (10), William (9) and Peter(7)
Stephen and John are engine workers at coal mine and Thomas is fireman – coalmine engine

1871 Census

Johnstons In Dearham , Cumberland – census states that Stephen b. Workington , Hannah b. Whitehaven and all the children were all born Dearham
Stephen age 50 and his wife Hannah age 50 and their children Janet (24), Stephen (21), William (19), Peter(17), Robert (10) and Hannah (3)
Stephen and Stephen are pit enginemen and William and Peter are firemen

1881 Census

Jonstons In 1 Blackburn St. Workington , Cumberland – census states that Stephen b. Workington , Hannah b. Whitehaven and all the children were all born Dearham
Stephen age 60 and his wife Hannah age 63 and their children Janet (33), William (29), and Hannah (11)
Stephen is an employer of 2 men and a boy at the engine house works and William is a coal miner

1891 Census

Jonstons In 1 Blackburn St. Workington , Cumberland – census states that Stephen b. Workington , Hannah b. Whitehaven, Robert b Standin Stone Cumberland and Janette b Liscard Cheshire
Stephen age 70 and his wife Hannah age 72 and their son Robert (29) and Grand daughter Janette Jones (18 )
Stephen is an employer a stationery engine man and Robert is a coal miner

1901 Census

60 Cumberland St Workington Cumberland Hannah age 82 a widow living with her son Stephen age 50 a dock Crane Driver b. Dearham, Stephen’s wife Rebecca age 50 b Bedlngton, Norhumberland and their 4 children


April May June quarter 1905

Hanna Johnston age 84 death registered in the Cockermouth Cumberland District GRO ref Volume 10b Page 374 ( Note Workington is in this district

A reminder re census.

The National Archives has relinquished Crown Copyright on documents within its control provided certain conditions are met. Basically you are required to include (a) an acknowledgement that the record is in the care of TNA (b) the full reference of the document.

In the case of a census entry
For 1841 this includes the class/piece/book number, folio and page No.
For 1851-1901 this includes the class/piece number, folio and page No.
For 1911 this includes the class/piece
