Hannah Lock married John Randall/Randle/Rendle at Kingswear on 25 Feb 1832. Their children include William H (1833), Mary Ann L (1835), Sarah Ann(1837), John Henry(1839 ), Betsy(1841), Hannah(1843 ), Jane !846 ), Thomas L (1848 ) , Samuel J(1849 ), Catherine(1852) George W L (1855).

I have traced Hannah in 1841-1871 census and her probable death in 1883, age 77.She is shown as being born in Kingswear circa 1808. Can anyone help with her precise birth details and parentage, please

Hi BB,

Have you traced her in 1881 census, if her death was in c.1883

What was her last residence in 1871.

There are a few candidates in Devon and an entry in Shipton-on-Stour.

Steve,

In 1871 she is recorded as Anna Rendle, (66) living with children Jane, Thomas and George at Higher Union Street, Torquay. Birth place - Stokenham

I have a possible match for her in 1881. Hannah Rendell (77), is living alone at 4 Church Cottages, Tormoham (Torquay) Birth place - Paignton

Not sure how you think this may help in finding her date of birth/baptism or names of parents.

If you can narrow down where she was born and died, you know where to look for Parish records for births and deaths.
If she was married at Kingswear the parish registers should include either one or both of her parents and where she was possibly born.

On the Anc**ry site, some of the death records show birth and death dates.

Have a look at this link, it may be of more help.

Steve,

Both 1851 and 1861 give her place of birth as Kingswear, and both agree on year of birth as 1808.

Record of her marriage at Kingswear has been found, but not of her baptism. It would not be unusual for her to have grown up in Kingswear but to have been baptised elsewhere. I am hoping someone might have something in their family records to resolve this.

Hi BB
If you have her marriage record then there was no info as to her parents.
As for the baptism, I'm sorry to say that she could have been baptised at any time.
I had a Gt.Gt.Aunt, who was baptised 1 week before her wedding. And that was 20 years after her birth. And some of my Gt.Uncle and Aunts, not until 10 years later.
Did you check to see all baptisms for all years for Hannah, up until her marriage at Kingswear.
I'm sorry if I appear to be asking obvious questions, but I can only relate to my experiences.

Hi

According the the Hugh Wallis site, Kingswear has not yet been indexed on the IGI.

Have you tried other people with the surname of Lock born in Kingswear? These may be relatives.

Hi

Hannah Lock was my great great grandmother, her son George, my great grandfather. I'd love to know how you are connected?? I have not yet found the parents of Hannah although I am slowly going through the Kingswear Parish Registers, so, when finished I am hopeful that I will be able to tie some things up!! I'd love to know what information you have, and as I say, how you are related.

Best Wishes, Hilary

Hi Hilary,

The information I have is that John and Hannah (Lock) Rendle had the following children:-
William Henry (27 Oct 1833), Mary Ann Lock (3 May 1835), Sarah Ann (19 Mar 1837), John Henry (2 Jun 1839), Betsy (29 Aug 1841), Hannah (31 Dec 1843), Jane (8 Mar 1846), Thomas Lock (born 14 Jul 1848 ), Samuel James ( 11 Nov 1849), Catherine (b c 1852), George William Lock (3 Sept 1854). All at Stokenham, all dates of baptisms unless otherwise stated.

I am descended from Mary Ann. She went to live as "housekeeper " to a married, but separated, man, James Raymond, in Plymouth by whom she had three(?) children. Her daughter, Mary Ann Raymond, is my great grandmother.

You may wish to know that John Rendle was baptised at Dean Prior on 3 May 1807, the son of William and Elizabeth who married at South Brent circa 1802.
William claimed he was born in Manaton but grew up in Widecombe in the Moor.

I have been unsuccessful in discovering Hannah's parentage. If you find anything, I hope you will let me know.

Hi Hilary,

I have just been told that there is a record of a marriage between William Rendel and Elizabeth Randle at South Brent on 2 Mar 1802. I think that looks like ours.

I have a death certificate for a John Rendle, an "errand man" of Stokenham who died on 17 Feb 1866 of "mortification of the foot" aged 58 (b c 1807/8 ). The informant was Ann Ball. I think this may have been Ann Allery who married Thomas Ball. Do these names mean anything to you? This looks as if it could be our John as Hannah is shown as a widow in 1871.

Free BMD shows the death of a Hanna Rendell in Newton Abbot district in March 1883, aged 77. Is that our Hannah?

Do you, by any remote chance, have a photo of Hannah? I have a photo of an unidentified woman who I have deduced is one of three possible people, including Hannah. It was taken in Newton Abbot around 1878/83.

I started putting my tree on Genes Reunited but had such a poor response that I have let my membership lapse. If you want more details send me a private message through this site.

Until three years ago I was living in Torquay. I have now moved "up north" (of Bristol)!

Hi again!

For some reason I am unable to access the private messaging system, perhaps you would be able to 'private message' me?? You obvously have a lot more information than I have about the family as you've already mentioned names that I am not familiar with, so, really would like to get in touch with you somehow to find out more. Any ideas?? Shame you're not still in Torquay as I'm just down the road in Brixham!

Look forward to hearing from you, Hilary
