Hi all. Look up in 1881/1891 census. My poor old peepers have had a hammering today.

Hannah Maria Cahill c1871. Manchester.

Brother Thomas Cahill c1866. Manchester, is a Sugar Boiler in 1911 census.

Hannah married Alfred Ives in Jan Qtr, 1892. Manchester.

I sense an Irish connection here.

Wrong Steve
Thomas wasn't a Sugar Boiler in 191# census
he was an Ingar Biler...
Let's set the record straight here.
All of us have an Ingar Biler in our family tree somewhere...:D

Just bringing up an old thread.

Hannah Maria Cahill. 1871. Manchester. mmn BRETT.

John Cahill married an Ann BRETT in 1952. Rochdale.

So it seems possible that these census returns might be the right ones.

Thoughts anyone.

Steve.:)

I've checked all the Cahill children from the 1881 Census and, with the exception of Susan and Anne whom I can't find, they all have mmn Brett.

Interestingly I can't find Susan but there is an entry March 1861 Manchester 8d 254 for an Ann Theresa Cahill mmn Brett. Can't find a death so could she be Susan?

Yes......that's what I thought. ;)

I have Anne/a, as Hannah Maria Cahill in 1881 census.:2fun:

Getting back to Ann Theresa Cahill c.1861. Manchster.

John Cahill c.1839. Sligo, Ireland, was lodging here.......in 1901 census.

John Cahill
Age: 71
abt 1830
Relation- - Boarder

Born - Sligo, Ireland
Civil Parish -- Middleton
Eccl.parish-Birch St Mary

Address - 36, Langley Place.

Reg dist. Oldham
Sub-reg. dist.Middleton
ED-02
Piece: 3824
Folio: 27
Page Number: 5

Thomas Stuart. 42. b.Dublin. Occ. Chair maker.
Theresa Stuart. 39. b.Manchester. Oc. French polisher.
Thomas A Stuart. 13, b. Manchester.
Susannah Stuart. 10, b.Manchester.
Alexander Stuart. 1. (Birth reg 1899. Oldham. mmn. Cahill ).
John Cahill. 71. Widowed. (Labourer.?)

If this is Ann Theresa Cahill, I cannot find a marriage anywhere, in England, nor Ireland. Not seen in 1891, nor Father John Cahill(with any satisfaction).

No birth reg found for Thomas & Susannah Stuart, with mmn of Cahill.

I've tried Ancestree, FS, Lancs OPC, FreeReg.....has anyone got any more ideas, or where to look.??

It's not hypercritical, just really annoying.

Best I can find for John Cahill in 1891 is this

RG12/3250/F125/p2
"The Cosy"
Common Lodging House
18 Pump Street, Oldham Road,
Manchester
Sub District St Georges

John Cehill married 53 Traveller (Hawker) born Ireland.

The only bit of the above which rings true is that he was born in Ireland - every thing else is off.

I have found Teresa Stewart in 1911 living with daughter Susannah Miller and son in law John Miller.
She says she is married and has been for 29 years although I cannot find a marriage in 1881-1883. No sign of husband Thomas. She also says she had had 5 children and all are still living. Interesting because in the 1901 Census she has a son Thomas A aged 13 yet in 1911 she has a son Thomas aged 9. His birth is registered and mmn Cahill.
I can only find the following children
Thomas A 1888
Susannah 1891
Alexander 1900
Thomas 1902

I have just found the following marriages

Theresa Cahill/Edward Tanner Sep 1882 Manchester 8d 457

Theresa Tanner/Thomas Stewart Sep 1897 Bury 8c 795

I can't see a death for Edward Tanner but there is a birth reg for a Thomas Alfred Tanner in Manchester in 1888 but no mmn given

Make what you will of that lot!

Emeltee

The Thomas A. Stuart, aged 13, in 1901, could well be Thomas Alfred Tanner.

John Cahill was a Hawker in the 1881 census.:)

I'll have look, and see if can hammer it in.:2fun:

Thanks MLT.:)

1920 USA Census.

Name Thomas A Stewart
Mother Theresa Stewart
Father Thomas Stewart
Sibling Alexander
Birth 1889 England
Arrival 1911
Residence 1920 Brooklyn Assembly District 15, Kings, New York

Looks like a winner.:2fun:

Birth reg for Charles Edward Miller in 1909 Bury. mmn is FANNER......perhaps this should be TANNER.

Making Sussanah a Tanner, not a Stewart/Stuart. ??

Edna Miller 1910. Bury. mmn TANNER.

The only snag with those births is that Tanner was not Theresa's maiden name.

Can't find a Susan or Susannah as either Tanner or Stewart/Stuart

1920 USA Census looks spot on though.

Emeltee

Yes, found that marriage MLT.:)

I guess the only way if to get the marriage cert for Sussanah.......whatever her maiden name is, and see who her father might be.

Another for the pile.:2fun:

Theresa still alive in 1930, Brooklyn, New York.

I can only assume that Thomas Stuart/Stewart senior, headed for the USA in between the 1901 & 1911 UK census, leaving Theresa and Co. behind, until he was established there.

Too many shipping records for Thomas Stewart's to nail down the right one.

He was there in 1911, plus Thomas Alfred Tanner/Stuart. Theresa arrived in 1912, with the others mentioned.
