I’ve been researching a close friends family history for the last year now but I’m completely at a dead end with her maternal grandfather, and therefore that entire leg of her tree.

I have his marriage certificate (att.) but he disappeared a few years later, after my friends mother (his daughter) was born, the family never hearing from him after that.

I’d particularly appreciate some help in understanding the format of his RNR service number, and how to find details of him from that.

I’m particularly interested in confirming his mother’s maiden name, but also what happened to him...

Thanks Geoff. Reminder noted. We believe Horace (possibly known as Harry) to have been born 31 Dec 1918, so don’t expect to be alive. Heck - just realised he’d be 100 in 2 days time! That had escaped my notice...

This couple are in Middlesbrough in 1911 with children Evelyn aged 6, Olive aged 6, Thomas aged 3 and Eric aged 1. They have been married 7 years and had 5 children, 4 still living. Thomas is 34 and Lucy Jane 30.

Yes, my working assumption is that Lucy Jane Parker is Horace’s mother, though I’m struggling to find anything else to actually corroborate that, other that it seems to fit, and I can’t find alternative possible matches. I actually have his (assumed) birth certificate - att. (ordered from GRO - not from family effects).

I guess I’m trying to find some other information (possibly from RNR or service record?) to corroborate his mmn before launching into researching that family line. So the only definite facts we know are what are on his marriage certificate.

I was hoping to find some reference to him in the 1939 register, but no luck. I’m guessing that’s because of the 100 yr rule, in which case I may not have long to wait, depending on how frequently records are reviewed and updated?

The address on Horace's marriage cert. [1940] is the same as his brother, Thomas Brewster [1939], 2 Lynwood Avenue [one closed record].

Being a seaman doesn't help trying to find him..

There isn't much online usually re WW2.. You may have to apply to the National archives.. This may be him HERE

Though it does look closed until Jan 2019, not long to go

Given Dorothy's remarriage, Horace/Harold died [or they divorced] 1947-1956.

Thank you very much Geoff. I’d completely forgotten about the Lynwood Ave connection - just picking this up again after a year away from it. So it’s a high possibility H was the 3rd person at that address, as you note.

And I guess the Olive Malcolm (witness on marriage certificate) is his sister, who married John Edward Malcolm in 1933. So that all corroborates the 1911 census record is sound.

Also realised the address on his birth certificate (Lumley St) ties in with the 1911 census record, and corroborates Lucy Jane Parker as his mother.

Agreed re. divorce or died between 1947 and 1956. He just disappeared without trace so nobody still living knows. I’ve not been able to find any divorce record (Ancestry), but then I’ve not been able to find any for other family members we know to have been divorced.

Looking forward to BT 377/7/22064 record being opened - hoping that’s a real-time process rather than ‘batch’ (I work in mainframe I.T.) in which case I’ll hopefully know in a little over 6 hours! 😂

I’ll start digging back on the Lucy Jane Parker line then - I think I had sufficient fact all along, just not the confidence I was right.
