groom's birth date:
groom's birthplace:
groom's age:
bride's name: Mary Elliston
bride's birth date:
bride's birthplace:
bride's age:
marriage date: 01 Apr 1824
marriage place: Rockbeare,Devon,England
groom's father's name:
groom's mother's name:
bride's father's name:
bride's mother's name:
groom's race:
groom's marital status:
groom's previous wife's name:
bride's race:
bride's marital status:
bride's previous husband's name:
indexing project (batch) number: M05157-1
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 916929
reference number:

and then this baptism:

name: Edward Harwood
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 23 Jan 1825
baptism/christening place: ROCKBEARE,DEVON,ENGLAND
birth date:
birthplace:
death date:
name note:

father's name: Edward Harwood
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Mary
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: C05157-1

then this census:

Ann RICHARDSON Visitor U Female 55 Hampton Court, Middlesex, England Dressmaker
Joshua MENHAM Visitor M Male 56 London Westminster, London, Middlesex, England Surveyor

and this baptism:

name: Elizabeth Harwood
gender: Female
baptism/christening date: 11 Apr 1819
baptism/christening place: St. Andrew's, Holborn, Middlesex, England
birth date:
birthplace:
death date:
name note:
race:
father's name: William Harwood
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Mary
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: I01381-6
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 374357
reference number: yr 1818-1820 p 95

In the 1881 census I think Elizabeth is Edward's 2nd and it's possible his 1st spouse was Elizabeth's sister, Sophia. Can we prove that? Are they cousins? That is are William, father of Elizabeth, and Edward who married in Devon in 1824 brothers?

Regards,

Dave

Thanks to dave we have an age for Sophia but I can't find a birth/baptism for her:

1851
HARWOOD, Edward Head Married M 26 1825 Tailor
Devonshire
HARWOOD, Sophia Wife Married F 28 1823
Middlesex

KING, Eliza Servant Unmarried F 19 1832 House Servant
Middlesex

Piece:1476 Folio:35 Page:23
Registration District: Saint George Hanover Square

Can we prove she is Elizabeth's sister and that they are cousins of Edward?

I'm looking now for the marriage of William & Mary - parents of Elizabeth.

Several in London and one in Devon.

Ok next question. What pob and dob do we get from census for William?

Thanks dave but I'm not sure about that. I don't know of any who left England. I did notice Grace when I was searching for William.

Can we find pob in census for William as Devon?

Edward senior is a tailor too. Somehow the HARWOODs are connected to the NEWBERYs of Hampton Court.

Next is to see who Mary HARWOOD married.

Time I took this thing off, so will catch up tomorrow.

It probably won't help much but I have found Edward Harwood aged 16 journeyman Tailor in 1841 in Rockbeare, Devon with Parents Edward 40 tailor and Mary 35. Siblings are Sarah 8 and Grace and Rebecca both 4 mths.

Probably teaching my grandmother to suck eggs but have you looked on the Hugh Wallis site at the baptisms and marriages for Rockbeare. I don't think it is a complete listing but it does give the marriage of Edward's parents Edward harwood and Mary Elliston 1/4/1824 as well as the children of Joseph and Grace, Edward 1794, Mary 1786 and William 1784.

Hi Dave,

Again if you look on the Hugh Wallis site for St Andrew Holborn you will see the baptism for Elizabeth daughter of William and Mary Harwood in 1819 but the entry gives her birth as 20/4/1805 which makes her too old to be the Elizabeth in the Censuses.

Hello Emeltee,

Thanks for reminding me. I do know and do use the site but have not as part of this puzzle.

It's not as simple as it looks because there is a probate record for an Elizabeth HARWOOD - Spinster. Also age at 55 does not fit the Elizabeth sister of Sophia. So it looks as if there are 2x Elizabeth.

1851
Class H0107 Piece 1604 Folio 303 Page 7
As transcribed
Barbasia Newbery head age 55 owner of house born Hampton Court
Jane Bullivant niece age 15 born Greenwich
Har-- EP Slade niece age 4? born St Martin Le Grand
William Harwood visitor age 63 occ tailor born Beckbear Devon

Barbara Newbery of Elgin Cottages died 13 Oct 1865.
Sole Executor Edward Harwood (occ. Tailor) of East Mosley, Surrey.

Re the 1881 census with Edward & Elizabeth:

Edward's probate gives Elizabeth Harwood as spinster, and so does her probate.
I don't have a copy of either and I don't have the dates. Age and RD would fit for this one:

Deaths Sep 1882
Harwood Edward 57 Kingston 2a 169

Or do we have 3x Elizabeth?

One born 1805 and baptised in 1819, one born abt 1821 found in 1841 & 1851 and one born abt 1826 found as 'wife' in 1881.

Hi Dave,

Edward Harwood (tailor) probate was dated 1885 though he died in 1882. Elizabeth Harwood is down as spinster living at Walton Road East Moseley. Edward on the other hand was of Bridge Road East Moseley. I think I may have posted this before.
