George says he is a bachelor at his marriage in 1892. My guess is that soon after 1881 (when he and Mary Ann were still together, indexed as Ossex) they decided to split and forget the marriage without any formal divorce which was very difficult and expensive to obtain at that time.

In 1891 there are several Mary Ann XX born Bethnel Green 1859, if you checked all these to identify their marriage I think one of them will have not married formally but will just have taken her "husband's" name and will actually be Mary Ann Havinden/Essex.

Ancestry claims to cover both Marriage and Divorce but I can't find any record set that refers to divorce.

Thanks Elaine.

If there is no record of a divorce then I guess you are right about what they did.

I have the 1881.

I've had no luck so far tracing Mary Ann.

I'm off in about 1 hour for a 9-day break. Taking a trip to far south coast of NSW.

I can't answer that one Ozn. I don't have any children for George R. & Mary Ann in my tree. These two from second marriage:

In1841 Henry Beckett aged 45 is clearly not born this county, same as his wife and presumably his brother Thomas.

When Ann Beckett was baptised in 1822 the next entry was for her sister Elizabeth who it states was born 13 March 1820.

Another child Thomas Barton Beckett was baptised at St Giles without Cripplegate, 25 Dec 1828 (born 14 July), s.o. Elizabeth and Henry, a currier of Radnor St.

There was a marriage of a Henry Beckett and Elizabeth Barton 4 Nov 1818 in Kettering Northants.

There is no trace of this couple in Kettering in 1841 (when your H&E are in London) but in 1851 (when your H&E are not in London) there is in Kettering, Pc1739, F374, P5 :-
Henry Beckett, 55, currier, b City of Durham
Elizabeth, 53, b Kettering Northants.

This couple still in Kettering in 1861 but in 1871 are in London, 19 Morton St Islington Pc 289, F14, Pg22
Henry Beckett, 76, currier, b Durham Sunderland
Elizabeth, 74, b Kettering Northants
Elizabeth Robinson, 25, lodger, Telegraph clerk, b Australia

Elizabeth Beckett d. Islington Q1 1873, aged 76
Henry Beckett d. Islington Q1 1875 aged 79

I think there is a good chance this is the right couple and Elizabeth's maiden name is Barton.
