Hi I hope this is the correct place to post this query.
I would like to contact descendants of the above family as my husbands Great Grandfather Alfred Charles Roe worked as personnal assistant/chauffuer for Alfred Head.

This is what I know about the family from various sources.

Albert Alfred Head (Alfred Head's father} was born in Ipswich Sept. q 1844
from something I found on the internet I believe he died around 1928.

Albert Head married Caroline Hanbury on February 15th 1876.

Their second son Alfred Head was born in March q 1878 Islington. He was disabled I believe he had what is now known as Cerebal Palsy.

At some time after Alfreds birth Albert and Caroline went to live in Wimbledon. They lived at 15 Lingfield Road Wimbledon which was known by the name of Corrie Lodge.

My husbands Great Grandfather went to work as Alfred's assistant sometime after 1891. Alfred and Mary Roe's 3rd child Annie Roe was born in Wimbledon circa 1894.

In 1900 Alfred Head's parents bought Bury Hill House in Anna Valley near Andover. This was the area where Alfred Roe's family came from. A Miss Waithman a friend of the family became Alfred Head's housekeeper.

In 1902 Alfred Head bought his first motor car and Alfred Roe became his chauffuer as well as his assistant. Alfred Roe also kept a diary between 1902 and 1915 detailing many of the journeys that they had in that and subsequent vehicles also mentioning many relatives and friends of the Head family as well as his own. I have a transcribed copy, the original held by a member of the Roe family. It is a fascinating read.

On 14th September 1904 Alfred Head married Mary Catherine Waithman I think she was a niece of the housekeeper. Shortly after their marriage Caroline Head Alfred's mother died.

Alfred and Mary Head had 3 children Albert Hanbury Head born June 4th 1908 christened July 8th at Upper Clatford Church.

Caroline Mary Head born Dec q 1911 christened January 8th 1912 at Upper Clatford.

and Muriel Elizabeth Head born May 6th 1913 christened July 11th Upper Clatford.

Upper Clatford by the way is the next village to Anna Valley, in fact they are virtually one and the same. Both just outside Andover.

Mary Catherine Head died after the birth of her last child.

I believe that somewhere around 1920 Alfred Head moved to Bournemouth. I have recently been told that he married again but the person who told me did not have any details. I do know that Alfred and Mary Roe went to run a guest house in Boscombe near Bournemouth around that date.

If any body knows anything about the Head family or could give me some idea about how to trace descendants I would be very grateful.

Thank you if you have read this far. Hope you are not too confused by the different mentions of Alfreds.

Hi, This week I have found details of Alfred Heads 2nd marriage. He married Katherine Annette Gabb (Daisy) on the 11th July 1917 at Fairlight Church Sussex. Katherine was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. D. H. Gabb of 18, Wellington Square, Hastings.

If anybody as any information on the Head, Hanbury, Waithman or Gabb families I would be very grateful. Also If anybody has any information on their descendants I would be delighted to hear from them.

The above information came from the Andover Advertiser dated July 13th 1917. Archive copies are kept on microfilm at the Andover Library. If anyone has any Andover connections and would like me to look up BMD announcement or the such like I will try and oblige. Thanks.

Hi

My fathers mother (my grandmother) was Annie Roe that you speak of in this post. She was born in Wimbledon on 3rd June 1896, and died in Leicester in September 1989.

I'd be interested in any more information that you may have on the Roe family

Hi Ken Thanks for your reply to my post. If you would like to e.mail me on eltrym42@yahoo.co.uk. I have lots of information on the Roe family. I am also in contact with various close and distant relatives all over the country. I have met your father a couple of times. He and my late mother in law (Kathleen Bull nee Roe) were cousins.

I am a member of a volunteer group which has recently cleared and recorded the grave of Albert Alfred Head in the Old Burial Ground at Richmond, where his first wife Caroline and his invalid son are also buried. I could email details of this to you together with a copy of a photo of the grave.

Thanks for that information Marchment. How interesting. I was going to see if I could send you a private message to pass on my e.mail. It appears that I can't. Have you any other details on the burial ground? Where is it exactly? I have contact details for a grandson of Alfred Head, Alberts disabled son. I will let him know about the clearing and recording of his ancestors grave.

Many thanks.

Hi Jacky,

Thanks for contacting me re the above family.

I tried to send you a private message but couldn't.

I have been in contact with a Mr Ian Head the grandson of Alfred Head, great grandson of of Albert. He sent me some photographs of his grandfather with my husbands great grandfather Alfred Roe. also a short family tree of the Head family.

I would be interested to see and perhaps have copies of any photographs you may have that have Alfred Roe in them.

I also have a book on the life of Alfred Head's mother Caroline nee Hanbury. and a diary written by Alfred Roe between 1902 and 1914 which mentions many members of the Hanbury and Head families and other names associated with them.

I see that you are in Basingstoke. You may have noticed that I am just down the road in Andover.

Thanks again for contacting me.

Many Regards

The Head family was living in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, or in a nearby settlement (Bayton?) in the 18th Century and before. They were Quakers, and my 5xGt Grandmother was Frances Head wife of my 5xGt Grandfather John Fry, son of John Fry born 1701 of Sutton Benger near Chippenham Wiltshire -who was father of Joseph Fry founder of the Frys of Bristol, and also father of William Storrs Fry whose son Joseph married Elizabeth Gurney (prison reformer 1780-1845). Son of John Fry b1733 was my 4xGt Grandfather called John Fry the younger (b Whitechapoel 1762). He married Elizabeth Head in Pennsylvania, USA, in 1786. Elizabeth was also a descendant of the Head family of Bury St Edmunds, a grandchild of John Head born 1688 who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1717. He and his son John Head (b 1723) became wealthy merchants and John Head the younger had connections with many influential Philadelphia families - his descendants included Johns Hopkins of Baltimore.

The Head family that remained in the UK were closely related to other prominent Quaker families, including the Frys as above, the Cadburys, and the Lloyds - and the Hanbury family who were closely associated with the Lloyds, bankers and iron masters. Mary Lloyd married Osgood Hanbury (1731-1784). In 1770,when 38, Osgood founded ther bank, Hanbury, Taylor, Lloyd, and Bowman, with his brother-in-law, Sampson Lloyd, and John Taylor junior, the son of Sampson Lloyd the elder's banking partner in Birmingham.

Albert Alfred Head was the son of Jeremiah Head and Mary Howard. Jeremiah Head (1789-1866) was Mayor of Ipswich 1857-58. He succeeded Ebenezer Cobbold (another well known Ipswich family - Tolly Cobbold brewery etc).

Jeremiah Head was the first works manager of the Ransomes Steam Plough Works. Jeremiah Head, who had been articled to Robert Stephenson & Co. in Newcastle at the age of 17 in 1852. Head, a relative of the John Head who became a partner in Ransomes, had played an important part in the development of the steam plough and had at one point been assigned full time to work done by Stephensons in producing windlasses for John Fowler, a pioneer in steam ploughs for field drainage.

Jeremiah was son of John Head (1759-1812) and Mary Leaman. John Head was son of John Head (1731-1782) and Ann Wheeler. John Head was the brother of Frances Head (as mentioned at the beginning of this message). He was the first of the family to move from Bury St Edmunds to Ipswich. His daughter Ann Head married John Warder of Philadelphia (1751-1828) who was son of Jeremiah Warder (a revolutionary) and his wife Mary Head (1714-1803) who accompanied her father John Head (b 1688 - see above) who with his wife Rebecca Mace sailed all that way from England to America in 1717. To go back one further generation, John Head b1688 was son of Samuel Head and Sarah Jackley who were also parents of Thomas Head 1691-1744. Thomas married Anne Brewster (of a family originating in Frostenden, Suffolk). They were the parents of Frances Head (yes, the one already mentioned twice).

I hope you can make sense of this, perhaps by converting it into a pseudo family tree - but there may be a few arrows to be drawn from one side of the family to another. I can of course provide more information on request.

Hi John,

Although I did not start this thread I am following with great interest as the second great grand-daughter of Jeremiah Head (b.1836, Ipswich).

I worked through your reply with great interest and with a little more research found some more data online, but got stuck with regard to Elizabeth Head, the grand-daughter of John Head (b.1688). Do you have any idea of her father's name? There are 3 possibilities as John Head senior appears to have had 12 children, including 3 boys.

Many thanks,
Jacky

Hi John, thanks for the very interesting information that you have sent about the Head and related families. I do find it all fascinating.
I was originally hoping to find photographs and information on my husbands great grandfather Alfred Roe who as I said earlier worked for Albert Head and his son Alfred. In the diary that Alfred Roe kept between 1902 and 1914 there are quite a few references to members of the Head and Hanbury families as I mentioned in my reply to Jacky. I will have to have another look at it and see which names are mentioned.

If there is anything that I can help you with please let me know. I have quite a few details of Alfred Head also some photographs.

Hi Jacky

Re the Elizabeth Head who married John Fry.

I only have two sons recorded of John and Rebecca Head (and would be interested in knowing about the third). The two I have are John (b1723) and Samuel (born about 1726). John (junior)'s daughter Elizabeth (from his marriage I think with Mary Hudson) married ---Baker (as suggested in John's will) although there is also a record of her marriage to John Scattergood on 13 August 1767 (and John Head Scattergood and Rebecca Scattergood are mentioned as grandchildren in John Head's will). I have no documentary proof but I think it most likely that Elizabeth Head who married John Fry was the daughter of Samuel Head and Mary Womeldorfe. I have seen reference to Samuel not being a Quaker. Samuel and Mary were married in Christchurch & St Peter's in Philadelphia (1748) and assume that Samuel ceased to be a Quaker as a result of this marriage - Mary was presumably not a Quaker. John Fry was of course from a Quaker family but was not when his children Alfred Augustus Fry, Honnor Fry and Hannah Fry were christened at Christchurch and St Peter's in the 1790's.

I found it surprising that John Fry married Elizabeth Head in Reading, Pennsylvania, 100km from Philadelphia (2 days by horse!). I haven't found any other reference to Reading, Penn, in connection with the family.

Regards, John

Hi Elwyn

On the day you posted your message I was away celebrating with my mother and other members of my famly, my mother's 90th birthday!

Many thanks for your kind offer of help. I have come across the Hanbury's quite a lot in my researches, starting with their links with the Bevan family (Paul Bevan married Rebecca Capper, daughter of Anne Fry and Jasper Capper - Ann b1756 being elder sister of John Fry), in this case in relation to the pharmacy business of Allen & Hanburys.

I may well come back and have some questions - I have only recently been tracing the Head family in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book you have on the Hanbury family sounds most interesting. I was also interested to see (probably from one of your earlier posts) that Alfred Head was disabled, but also noted that he had an active family life and a long life through interesting times.

Best regards

John

A short while ago I was asked about Samuel Head, son of John Head and Rebecca Mace of Bury St Edmunds and later Philadelphia. I had conjectured that Elizabeth Head who married John Fy was the daughter of this Samuel Head (who had married Mary Womeldorfe in Philadelphia in 1748).

I now have confirmation that this conjecture is correct, and have more information about the Womeldorfe family and would be happy to share this with others who may be interested.
