Hello to you all.
Im searching for ancestors of my grandfather Thomas Couley b.1908 in northumberland. His parents were William Couley b.1877 and Dorothy Ann Mains b.1881 (both also born in northumberland)
Williams father John Couley (spelt cooley on marriage certificate) b.abt 1850 married Mary Ann Gill in northumberland 1873.
Would be greatful if anyone could help XXX

Hello julie and thanks.
The names you have looked up for me are siblings of my grandfather.
I am a member of ancestry but still cannot trace my g.g.grandfather john. I think the problem is that the surname COULEY has been spelt so many different ways over the years. On johns marriage certificate it was spelt COOLEY and his father was named as francis COOLEY. On the 1881 census, johns wife was listed as Mary ann COWLEY but john is nowhere to be found.

The 1881 census does have a lot of errors. Where was John born in Northumberland and do you know his parents names. There is a John Cowley in Northumberland with parents but he is down as u/m.

What is Francis occupation on Johns marriage certificate?

Im not sure where john was born. He married Mary Ann Gill (born in leeds) 1873 at all saints and his father was listed as FRANCIS COOLEY. I dont know what johns mothers name was. I checked the northumberland register office and they have a record of johns marriage but no birth record although there was a john COWLEY born in northumberland in 1848 but it doesnt show his parents. As far as i know, john and Mary had 5 children - Margaret Ann, Mary Ann, Joseph, Frank and William (all surnames spelt COWLEY)

Hi Jo,

He's not jumping out on any of the census, wonder which one he is.
See he's not with the family in 1891 either, unless he done a runner earlier on. what was his occupation?.

Hi Julie,

John was a chainmaker. I cant understand why he is so hard to find. Although he isnt on any of the census, he is around somewhere as he was down on the baptisms of his daughter - Margaret Ann (July 10th 1875) his son - William (Nov 22nd 1876) and his son - Francis (Jun 1881).

Wonder if the family came from Ireland or Scotland. There are some Irish Couleys and Scottish. Also a Frances Couley in 1851 born abt 1825 Ireland occ freestone quarrier in the civil parish of Cadder county Lanarkshire.
