Hello. Thankyou for letting me join your forum. I am English and have lived full time in France for ten years. I was widowed just over 4 years ago. I am enjoying doing my family tree but come from a big family so it’s not easy. I am hoping to pick your brains for hints etc.,

I am Sorry, I forgot to add I am trying to find my Fathers ancestors, his name was Reginald Nash, born in Bristol on 20th May, 1916. One of 8 boys, his father was called Harry , mother Susan. I think Harry’s father was called John born 1837 who I think married Elizabeth and had 9 children . His father I think is George who married Jane and moved to Newport Monmouthshire and had 5 children of which John was 13 on the 1851 census. George May be the child of William and Fanny Nash but I am not sure.

The 1881 census looks to be correct. John is 45 and a metal dealer born Bristol.

Seems to be Elizabeth COX but no matching mmn for Samuel and no marriage ??

Second marriage for John ??

Problem is finding the right John in 1871, 1861, 1851 and 1841.

I'm having trouble finding the correct John before 1881.

I can't see a death that fits 1881 - 1891 but I can't find Elizabeth in 1891.

That is right and it’s interesting that you found the name Cox as I didn’t , I had found Bagley but the age for Elizabeth Cox does match. The next census I found in 1891 had Elizabeth down as a widow with the first 3 children (Harry being my Grandfather) then six more but their ages suggests they can’t be Johns (?). Also I think he was married before as the age difference (?) Maybe the census in 1891 with the same names and correct ages was a coincidence?

I found a census in 1851 in St Woollos Newport, Monmouthshire. Father George Nash b. 1817, Mother Jane b.1805 (?)
Children - William b.1834 , JOHN b. 1837,
Elizabeth, Ann & Ellen. They were all born in St. George (Bristol) Somerset except for Ellen.
Am I right I wonder in thinking that the JOHN is my great grandfather? I can’t remember how I found it.

There are several John Nash in earlier census the right age born Gloucester or Somerset but I don't think it's the mariner and I can't at the moment be sure of the right one in any census before 1881.

Thanks for that, I have Emma on the 1891 census aged 12 which matches. No father on census. Mother Elizabeth widowed.
I found a death of John Nash in 1886. Aged 49. So many John Nash’s!!

I found a Charles Nash born in Bristol in the 1911 census aged 21 boarding in Newport. Could this be the missing Charles?

In the 1901 census I found 6 children of Elizabeth but no Mother. Charles is on there aged 11. Bristol. Connection is St George.
