I'm relatively new to genealogy, so please bear with me!

I'm trying to get the birth certificate of my great grandad, Thomas Jones, born in 1864. I have his exact date of birth and his parents first names. Depending on different censuses he was either born in cArmarthenshire or Glamorgan.

I have requested his birth certificate from GRO using both counties but neither search has turned up anything. I'm not sure whether this is just because there are so many Thomas Jones that it isn't possible to track him within the quarters. Is there anywhere that I can search using the actual date of birth.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Only a small fraction of the baptism records on FamilySearch have dates of birth listed. They also don't list the parents. Not all the baptism records have images.

An image of this one is on another pay site I don't have access to

Thomas Jones
Wales, Carmarthenshire, Parish Registers, 1538-1912
birth: 5 Jun 1864
baptism: 14 Nov 1866 Carmarthen, St David, Carmarthenshire

I have no idea if the parents match. Also no idea if it is 5 or if a 6 has been misread as a 5.

Hi Suddes,
maybe working backwards might help..

do you know when Thomas died and where?

do you know of any siblings for him?

who did he marry and when/where?

did he have any children?

regards
Val

The only baptism I could find on Ancestry with those parents was this one:

Name: Thomas Jones
Baptism Date: 30 Apr 1865
Baptism Place: Hulme (near Manchester), Lancashire, England
Father: William Jones
Mother: Hannah

Thank you all for your help - I was completely at a loss as to how to proceed.

I am pretty sure the date of birth is correct and it matches with the 1939 register.

Thomas died on 29/12/1944 in Ponterdawe. I have his death certificate certificate.

He was married to Martha Jane but she pre-deceased him in 1924. They had a number of children, all of whom have long since died and contact has been lost with any of their children.

I'm trying to get Thomas' birth certificate, so that I can match it with 'possible' censuses and go back further. If I have the right censuses, the parents are William and Hannah. There is mention of a mother-in-law also called Jones, so I can only assume that Hannah's maiden name was Jones too!

Is he the Thomas Jones who appears with parents William and Hanannh and Hannah's mother Honor in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses in Swansea?

If so, he has a sister Jane born 1861 and a brother John born 1869. According to the GRO the following children were all registered in Swansea mmn Jones

Jane Dec 1861 Swansea 11a 474
Thomas June 1864 Swansea 11a 570
John Sep 1869 Swansea 11a 551

Unfortunately I cannot find any baptisms so the only way to find out if this is the right Thomas would be to send for the cert.

Yes I think it is the Thomas Jones that appears in those censuses. I will order that certificate and fingers-crossed it will turn out to be the right one. Thanks for everyone's help - I'll let you know the outcome.

I'm sure that I'll have more questions in the future - so pleased that I found this forum.
