Hello,

I am pretty new to this and need some help with Irish records. My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Constance Duggan. I have a copy of her UK death certificate which lists her birth as 16th October 1902 in Dublin. I also have her father's name as Edward Duggan from her marriage certificate of 1925 and that he was deceased then. I would really like to find out more about her for my father as he had lived with her when he was a boy and knows nothing about her background. My uncle seems to think that she may have been born in Cork rather than Dublin.

Can anyone help? I have used ancestry but can't find any record of her birth and obviously don't have her mothers maiden name. Are there any other channels I could follow. My father thinks she may have had a passport as he remembers her going on a pilgrimage to France when he was a teenager. Would I be able to find out her mother's maiden name from them?

Any help gratefully received.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

I can't see a birth in the Oct-Dec Qtr of 1902.

There is this one in Co. Cork but that's all I can find from FamilySearch. There are other sites to check but some require credits or a subscription.

Elizabeth Duggan
Event Type Birth
Event Date Jul - Sep 1902
Event Place Kinsale, Ireland
Registration Quarter and Year Jul - Sep 1902
Registration District Kinsale
Volume Number 5
Page Number 283 or 285 ??

I'll check a bit more.

Do you know when Elizabeth left Ireland as I can't find her in 1911 Irish census.

Do you have the details of any siblings?

Where did Elizabeth marry?

I can't see one who fits in the 1911 English census either.

2x Edward born Co. Cork in 1911 - one in Devon and the other in Glamorgan.

I could do with some help. :)

Mother's maiden name was not recorded on the Index to Civil Registration until 1929 Record Coverage

The original civil registration districts were based on 160 medical dispensary districts and in many cases cross county boundaries. This means that in certain cases births will be recorded in a county other than where the person lived.

Hello Dave,
Thank you very much for your help.
Elizabeth Duggan married William James Burke in Kentish Town London in 1925. I have got a copy of the marriage certificate from my father. My father has no idea when she came to London or the UK as his father was always tight lipped on the past. She may have been the daughter of an unmarried mother.

It was my grandfather, who is now deceased, who completed the death certificate. My father has no other documents relating to her.

Any ideas? I am working at the moment but will look at the other information you posted tonight.

I'm not sure, only if there isn't a birth for Elizabeth Duggan in Dublin. Then the net needs to be spread wider. The Census I gave, was in reaction to DaveHams post for a birth.

Irish GRO. https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/GRO_Research.aspx

'The General Register Office (Oifig An Ard-Chláraitheora) maintains a family research facility at Werburgh Street, Dublin 2.

At this office members of the public, for a prescribed fee, may search the indexes to the registers and purchase photocopies of records identified from the indexes. Please see Searches and Fees below for details of the fees.

Indexes in relation to the following records of life events are available for inspection at the research facility:'

'Births registered in the island of Ireland between 1st January, 1864 and 31 December, 1921 inclusive, and in Ireland (excluding the six north-eastern counties of Derry, Antrim, Down, Armagh, Fermanagh and Tyrone known as Northern Ireland) from 1922 onwards.
Deaths registered in the island of Ireland between 1st January, 1864 and 31st December, 1921 inclusive and in Ireland (excluding Northern Ireland) from 1922 onwards.
Non-Roman Catholic Marriages registered in the island of Ireland between 1st April, 1845 and 31st December, 1863 inclusive.
Marriages registered in the island of Ireland between 1st January, 1864 and 31st December, 1921 inclusive and in Ireland (excluding Northern Ireland) from 1922 onwards.

No sign of middle name or middle initial C and don't know if it's Dublin or Cork makes it very difficult.

A check of those 2 Edwards in 1911. ??

Thank you so much for the suggestion of the Irish records website. I have been having a good search through.

I have found a Maggie Duggan born on 16/10/1902 in Dublin with a father Edward and mother Lillie (which fits with some things my father has said). Obviously the man problem is that she is listed as Maggie and not Elizabeth. Could she have changed her name? Her death certificate is Elizabeth.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I have just realised looking at the image that she is not Maggie. That is the entry above and the computer has picked that up. There is a strike through so obviously not named at that point.

That the father Edward is a 'traveller' also fits with his description on the marriage certificate I have which lists him as a commerical traveller.

Does this mean I am from Gypsy or Irish Traveller stock?

I am really pleased I think I have found her (with your help).
