[This volume , which is said to have been written in part by Lord
Brougham, contains a careful an well -written narrative , compiled
from all available sources up to the date of publication. Most of the
original portion is composed of the story of John Rutherford, an
English sailor, who fell into the hands of the Poverty Bay natives
with eleven of his comrades, March 6th , 18 16. Eventually Ruther
ford was th only one of the party left alive , and he lived with the
Maoris , adopting their habits and mode of life , for ten years, all but
two months. He was made a chief, and even underwent the process
of tattooing , not only on his face , but on his body as well . He was
rescued by an American trading brig , commanded by Captain Jack
son , who took him to Otaheite , where he entered the service of the
British Consul and married a native woman . He reached England
in the Blanche frigate, in 1827, after an absence of21 years. He was
then in his 32nd year.]
