My great grandfather, worked in the Herefordshire Area, as a carpenter. Rumor is he was in the UK illegally, but died in 1924 from an accident while on the job. Search as I may, I haven't found a record of his death. Is there something anyone can tell me to make my search more successful? His name as we know it was Jose Pereira Dias.
Thank your for any suggestions

I don't know if this is your grandfather or not but I found an entry in the england & wales death registrations 1837 - 1983 on Ancestry.com

In the registrations for the July, August, September quarter 1923 was listed the following:

Diaz Jose age:23 in Liverpool Vol 8b Pg 124

Diaz - Herrera Jose Age 52 in Newcastle T. Vol 10b Pg 33

I know the spelling isn't correct, but if he was there illegally they might have got that wrong. The place is just where the death was registered not necessarily where he died. You would have to order a certificate to be sure if its him or not.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers

Thank you for that information, unfortunately, Jose Diaz Herrera wasn't who we were looking for, we ordered that certificate. And the Jose Dias that is 23 years old would be to young to have been our great grandfather. During the census taking, did they include all of the illegal immigrants? or was it hit and miss with them, do you know?

Thank you

sorry he wasn't the one you were after :'(. Not sure what they would do about putting illegal immigrants on the census. I should immagine it would be a hit and miss affair as they wouldn't want to be counted and would have avoided it if possible.
Do you know the years he was in Herefordshire before he died?
The 1901 census is the latest one released I know of. His death should be registered somewhere. Do you know if the company he worked for had any records of what name he went under? or may be a hospital record.
I'll keep an eye out for him & let you know if I find anything .

Loads of people were missed of the census's, information was incorrectly submitted - especially names, as the name was written down as the inspector thought it would be spelt!

I would of thought "Jose Pereira Dias" would of been an easy name to find! Maybe he changed it? Have you got his marriage certificate to your Grandmother? Check the details there - Name, place of birth, where he resides, Job, etc...

Hopefully that may help you :)
Cheers

I had a look on the IGI and there are a lot of Jose's with different variants of the surname. Do you know when he was born and which country. I found a missing relative on the ships in port census

Hello,

All we know about him, my great grandfatherJose Pereira Dias, was that he was from Portugal. We are guessing his birth year to approximately 1870. He apparently died in the Herefordshire Area and it's possible it was a work related death. He was a carpenter whom we believe was working illegally, but we have no confirmation of that. We do know he had at least one son, my grandfather, Bernardino Pereira Dias, who we have located. His burial site is in Llanelli Wales.

Thank you for your help
