Hi all,

I am new to the forum, and would like to know if anyone could refer me to someone who can assist me in finding my great grandfather John Cornelius Rose, born 1 August 1877, died 23 October 1967 (Kakamas, South Africa) place of Birth.
We believe it to be somewhere in the UK. He served in the British Legion in South Africa and received various medals from the Queen.

Would appreciate any help!

Thanks and kind regards,
Miricia

110 x John Rose born in England 1876 - 1878. None with middle initial C.

No John C in the 2nd Boer War database:

ROSE, John 4783 Private 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards 1st Dragoon Guards (abw.com) #
ROSE, John Orderly Imperial Hospital Corps WO127/9 Extract (Ted Beard) Roll Images
ROSE, John 4412 Sergeant Roberts' Horse WO127/19 Extract (Ted Beard) Roll Images
ROSE, John 4783 Private 1st Dragoon Guards Brit. Cavalry P-R (Kevin Asplin)
ROSE, John 4783 Private 1st (King's) Dragoon Guards 1DG QSAs (abw.com) #
ROSE, John 27073 Sergeant Major Prince of Wales' Light Horse WO127/16 Extract (Bill Wilson) Roll Images

I can't see a John C Rose in 1881 English census.

10x John Rose on 1881 Scottish census. Only one other with initial C and it's not Cornelius.

Ok i found something on the ancestry uk free

The dates given appear to have been for the Boer war. There is more on the original copy.

UK, Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls
NAME:
John Cornelius Rose
MILITARY:
1899-1902 - South Africa

No personal information noted so still none the wiser on his birth.

Not sure if he could have been Irish. I suppose the Irish also went over to South Africa to fight in the Boer War...? But then again Rose is a Scottish surname...

I have a ROSE born England in my tree.

All the John ROSE in post #2 are those who fought in the 2nd Boer War.

So ROSE #754 is not in the database - HERE

Thanks so much, Dave and Gibbo! I have send the Imperial War Museum an email to enquire, so I suppose there is still some hope of finding out where he was born. Thanks again everybody.

I've checked on Scotlandspeople, and there is only one John C. Rose.

1878 - ROSE, JOHN CHARLES. Male. URQUHART AND LOGIE WESTER/ROSS AND CROMARTY.

Not sure if this is he, but I had a look anyway.;)
