Hi, new here and new too all this family search. As told in presentation my English is rusty because I'm from Denmark, but my relatives on my grandmothers side is English, North England and maybe Scotland too.
I was told to make a new thread and ask for help and informations about what I know, so here it goes.
My Grandmothers name was Beatrice May Sheppard Born in New Castle Upon Tyne ( Elswick) in 1919 26. september, Married in 1945 too Jens Viggo Bagge, In New Castle. They moved to Denmark around 1960 when my mother was about 14 years old.
Beatrice had siblings: Dorris ( married name Lettin) , Rueben, Arthur and Standley maybe married a Doris Armstrong.
My grandmothers father was Samuel Richard Sheppard, Born in Birmingham 1879 or 1880, on the married registrations attest he is born 1879 but on the war papirs he is born 18. jan 1880. Royal Navy registers number 183946
I can't find Samuels parents name or siblings but I was told that his mother maybe was jewish from east europa. I haven't found anything about that and maybe she even was wife number two to Samuels's father, but thats not confirmed.
Samuel married Augusta Jones in 1908 in Kings Norton I think maybe she had a middlename. She was a tailor, many in the family was a tailor.
Augusta Jones ( new name was Augusta Sheppard) some places she is registed with Jones as middelname.
Augusta was born in 1878 Kings Norton, Worcestershire and on the birth records only her mothers maiden name is written and it is MacPherson. I can't find anything about Augustas mother, but the story goes, that her name maybe was Anne or Anna or even it was her middelname, but I don't know if that is correct or maybe missing a middle name or something. But Augustas mother or grandmother had worked on Edinburgh Castle so that must be my great great grandmother. One of them must have lived and born in Scotland.
Samuel and Augusta moved to Islington , I don't know when, but there deaths registrations is there and I think Samuel Died 1956 and Augusta 1952.
Augusta had at sibling ( maybe 6 ) maybe one brother called Edwin W Jones but one sister was Clara Ann Jones born 1871 I think and my search find that she married a Martin Joseph Callaghan and had a son called Bernard Callaghan born 1899.

I think that was it, my biggest issue is that every time I find a birth or death registration there is on the right side some numbers. for example vol 6 page 885, what does that mean? And of cause it is so exciting to find out if my great great grandmother was scottish and from MacPherson clan.
I'm going to England ( London) this summer and to Scotland- Edinburgh later to find out of someting, is there some places that I can look for informations?
So any small tricks or guide to how I search correct or even help to find our more would be a gift.

Regards

First of all the Samuel Sheppard born Kings Norton 1880 died Kings Norton 1880.

There is this birth

Samuel Richard Shepperd March 1879 Birmingham vol 6d p 123 mmn Bennett

There is a marriage in Birmingham 20 September 1874 between a Samuel Sheppard and a Julia Ann Bennett.
The GRO reference is Sep 1874 Birmingham vol 6d p225.

The volume refers to the book it is written in and the page is obviously the page of the book it is written on. These two references (volume and page) are very useful when ordering certificates as it saves the GRO staff having to spend time searching pages and pages to find the event.

In 1881 the family were living at Court 7, 3 Benacre Street, Birmingham
Samuel Shepherd 29 Steel Toy Maker born Birmingham
Julia Shepherd wife 26 born Birmingham
Kate Shepherd dau 8 born Birmingham
Louisa Shepherd dau 4 born Birmingham
Samuel Shepherd son 2 born Birmingham

The reference is RG11/2981/F9/p12

As you can see there are various ways of spelling Sheppard always try looking for variations of the spelling if you can't see anything under Sheppard.

Hi, thank you, I'll look the link and that's right what you found, I also have the original birth attest from my grandmother, Beatrice and her married registrations.
But one thing I don't understand is the thing you are writing : 10b and page 82 , is this a place to find the information? can see that others are doing the same.

Hi, thank you, that's a little bit confusing for me to read, I'm sorry. So what I understand is that Augusta Jones mother is born In scotland 1838 and her name is Ann or Annie, and the surname can be different?
And you can't find marriage between a Jones and MacPherson?
But what is the first text where above where Ann Jones have Augusta isn't her?

Hi Michelle,

If you wish to order copies of certificates from the GRO you will need to enter

event = birth, marriage or death
year
which quarter of the year
the volume
the page no
the surname
the given name
plus something perhaps I've forgotten

The correct spelling might be Sheppard but it could be any one of several spellings in various records because most of them are transcriptions so depends on the writing and also some are written as they were heard. If you heard the word you could write it down any one of four ways.

1901 census is the only one I have found so far. I hope other members here can find Augusta in 1891 and 1881. And perhaps the family in earlier census.

Ann/Anne/Annie born Scotland about 1838. Can't always rely on ages in census being accurate. Could be +/- 1 or 2 or more years. If found in other census then it might have place of birth (= pob) as more than just Scotland.

mcpherson/ macpherson/ m'pherson/ mc pherson

Think I have found Augusta in 1891

Hockley Hill, Birmingham
Fanny Stephenson Head 46 Unm Milliner Warwickshire
Augusta Jones Visitor 12 Birmingham

Unfortunately that doesn't help much.

Could this be the family in 1881

RG11/2985/F4/p2
House 34, 5 Court, Bromsgrove Street, Birmingham
Charles Jones 41 Butcher Staffordshire
Ann Jones wife 43 Scotland
Edward Jones son 15 Worcestershire
Clara Ann Jones dau 10 Worcestershire
Charles Jones son 9 Worcestershire
Walter Jones son 7 Worcestershire
Cwesett?? dau 2 Worcrestershire

I've looked at the image and it does read Cwesett. It is written above another name which has been crossed out and I can't make out what it is although it appears to begin with an E
