I've been away recently and can't remember if I have posted this before (is there a way to look up threads you've posted?)

Henry Arthur Barnett was born about 1866 London, England - I wondered if he was in the 1871 census? Very little to go on, I know.

I'm told Barnett was a very good barber in Fleet Street, (probably his father) if that is any help, although his death certificate shows his father to be Edward, mother's first name not known, surname I have seen spelt Rutherford & Rugtherford and that he was a retired baker. Maybe his grandfather was the barber?

Wonder if there is a marriage for Edward then?

The fleet street barber is actual fact tho.

That sounds good Gibbo as I had mentioned the mother's maiden name as Rutherford on the death certificate. Do Edward and Ann show up on earlier censuses before Henry was born, or in the 1861 census or 1881 census when he would have been 17? I know he moved to Australia in or about 1886.

Do you know of a site where I could see the barbers of Fleet Street in the 1800s?

Wow Dave, you are moving along. Thank you! - but why did you say that in the 1881 census something was wrong?

Is 78 Dean St, Westminster

Sub-registration district: St Anne Soho a long way from Sussex. ??

At least Edward is a hairdresser?

Thanks for letting me know how to find my threads. I knew there would be something somewhere.

Hi
you will notice I removed the bit about an error. I made the error, as I was thinking Henry had emigrated before the 1881 census which showed him still in UK. Once I re-read the thread I realised I had got the emigration date wrong.

I think the addresses on the census show Edward jnr was a hairdresser in central London.
Edward snr was born Gosport (Portsmouth), his wife was from London. They had their children a bit further up the coast in Brighton

Their son Edward Jnr married Ann from Brighton. They had one child Frances, in that town, then moved to London. In those days, most of central London apart from the actual City of London was in Middlesex reg district, i.e Islington, Pimlico, and Westminster. Soho in Westminster, was a thriving entertainment centre, including establishments to service the seedy side of ilfe. but after the 1980's became a thriving business area with up market cafe's and residential areas.. (It still has its *** shops but you could say more up market). Battersea and Wandsworth are just over the river, so all places he lived in London, or his children were born, are within easy reach of Fleet St. Fleet St is in the City and is where all the newspapers had their offices. They probably didn't live where he worked.

Brighton is in Sussex, on the south coast. It is approx. 50 miles from central London, Soho is in central London

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate all this.

With regard to the 1871 census (below)
1871
2 Agnes Terr, Wandsworth

Piece: 711
Folio: 41
Page Number: 41

Edward H Barrett 29 Brighton Hairdresser
Ann Barrett 35 Brighton
Francis E Barrett 10 Brighton
Edwd R R Barrett 7 Middlesex
Henry A Barrett 5 Middlesex
Horace Barrett 3 Battersea
Fredk G Barrett 1 Wandsworth
Robert Rutherford 31 Brighton, B.I.Law, Schoolmaster

Did it actually show Barrett (not Barnett) - it definitely is the same family though.

yes, it is not a mis-transcription, the actual record does read Barrett. Obviously an error though, maybe it was a Rutherford who made the return and he got the name wrong
Fair enough Dave, we know it's the right family anyway.

I've now found the marriages of Edward Barnett Jnr & Snr

I am very grateful to have that much information, so thanks again.

I guess I could find the deaths, too - but not tonight!
