There are probate records for about five Henry Carter's all around the same time. This looks the nearest date,

Name: Henry Carter
Probate Date: 29 Jun 1878
Registry: Principal Registry
Death Date: 26 May 1878
Death Place: Southampton, England

It describes Henry as a Bricklayer and it was proved by a John Carter of Midhurst gentleman and brother of one of the executors.

Does this sound like him??

Thanks for looking Amanda.

I have the family in 1851 and 1861 and no occupations for the children. In 1871 I have Surgeon ? for Henry junior but I presume that means it's hard to make out.

None of the Probate records had any of the Henry's as a surgeon, there was one who was an Esq who died 08 Nov 1877, formerly of Elm Grove Portsea widow Ellen Gertrude Carter.

Thanks Amanda.

His father was a doctor. I have no marriage for Henry junior. Looks like there is no Probate record. Death 17 May 1878. The family has RN connections.

The image of the 1871 census is very clear,
father Henry Carter is given as "Surgeon General Practitioner M.R.C.S.L." then below him his two sons, George Henry, 40, and Henery Clifton, 38, each just have "do", i.e. ditto,

(M.R.C.S.L. is Member of the Royal College of Surgeons London)

1861 George & Henry are ditto'ed as General Practitioners, M.R.C.S.L. , same as their father, as 1871, but are now aged 34 and 32, (lovely clear writing, no ambiguity)

Despite the 1861 and 1871 censuses saying George Henry & Henry Clifton were medics like their father Henry, only Henry senior is in the UK Medical Register, looks like they worked with him but maybe weren't qualified.
