Hi Paul

Yesterday I googled Canal Boatmen and I think you should try the same. It might explain why you can't find them on various Census.
If I have time tomorrow I'll have a look

Hi Maddie,
Just did as you suggested and Googled Canal Boatmen...looks like that line of searching is dead in the water (no pun intended)....no wonder I can't find any trace on the census returns...such a shame as they sound like a bunch that it would be fun to research.....they certainly led colourfull lives by the sound of it....No idea where to go from here though....thanks for your help Maddie...........Paul

Dear Paul

I wondered whether you had tried the National Archives site for Henry Jones under Medal Card Index. The main problem for you is that you may not have enough information for him
Worth a try

Hi Maddie,
I tried the medal card index and you were right........I don't have enough information about him to find him, however I have found his grave in the local cemetery and I have obtained his death cert this morning.......he was living in Rochdale at time of death but still no name of his mother.......he died in 1938 aged 42 yrs.....the death was witnessed by one Edward Jones....my dads elder brother and Henry's eldest son......so now I have his last known address, his marriage cert from Derby in 1917 and his death cert from 1938...with his father Thomas ( the boatman ) not showing anywhere at all and his mothers name unknown it seems that branch of the tree is going to be difficult.......maybe contacting the waterways trust would shed some light on Thomas.........but with the term boatman covering so many jobs it's not certain that he was working the canals at all........heres hoping.........thanks again Maddie............Paul

Hi Jonah

You are very welcome. I do watch Waterworld and Canal boats of television, and I just got an idea. You never know whether it is going to work !
