Henry Norbrook

There is a lot of information re Henry Norbrook, if you google: My first cousin is directly related and I found a mountain of information: he came from Jamaica from a plantation called Norbrook Plantation, hence his surname. He was born around 1713/15 his master was Charles Long owner of plantation - was taken to England to be servant for his sister Anne Carter and her husband. she died in 1794 and gave him his freedom. He married in 1760 to an English girl and had many children. Some descendants are in Australia. Just google its all true. :) . He was affectionately known as Harry. and seemingly a well loved man. hope this helps.
 
Really sad to hear this. Researching our family tree, it turns out we are related to Steve (and Henry Norbrook) via the Joass strand that arrived in Australia in mid 1800s. We were always quite dark in complexion and curiosity got the better so took a DNA test a while ago and it is true as could see the trace DNA elements. Very interesting.
 
Steve Graham was my cousin. I have access to his tree, as a guest. Whatever I have access to, I can pass on. I cannot however, guarentee any accuracy or validation/sources.

Wow its been a while since this thread but I have never forgotten it, it was very interesting.

One thing I would like to clear up for the newer members who post on this thread is that the "N WORD" was in fact for the word Negro. As someone complained the word Negro was removed.

Hi, I've just joined. I have discovered Henry Norbrook was my five times great grandfather. He and Charles Long were children together in Jamaica which may explain why Charles took him back to Britain. I would love to hear from anybody else related to Henry. I'm in Aus.
 
Hi Dave, I noticed that Steve Graham had died. I must admit some earlier posts made me feel uncomfortable: worries over skin colour, splitting hairs over what is or isn't derogatory. Anyway, no 'n’ words from me. Henry was African (West Coast if my dna can be trusted) and, sadly, 'the colour has faded out'. Henry sounds like a fascinating and good man and I'm proud to be his descendent.

Wow don't be to quick to judge us, some of these posts have been edited and or deleted by one person, who has since left the group. A few of these replies were us defending ourselves over posts that have since been deleted. The Negro word was used once to the best of my memory and that was when referring to a transcript, the word has been posted as it was part of the record and not for any other purpose and certainly not used in a derogatory way by us.

My lineage from Harry is (if it is correct, I am a 6th-great-grandson of Harry's):
* 6th gg's = Harry NORBROOK (c.1713-1794) & Hannah (Cooper) NORBROOK (1732-1817) of Jamaica and of England

* 5th gg's = William Henry NORBROOK (1773-1849) & Rebekah (Watts) NORBROOK (1769-1836) of England

* 4th gg's = Rebecca (Norbrook) PAYNE (1805-1892) & John PAYNE (1797-1869) of England who emigrated to New York City

* 3rd gg's (American Civil War Generation) = Alfred Daniel PAYNE (1840-1873) & Mary Augusta (Ebbets) PAYNE (1840-1889) of New York City

If this lineage is correct, then one of Harry's granddaughters was Rebecca (Norbrook) PAYNE (1805-1892) who was born in London, UK, then settled in the United States in New York City. This Rebecca had a brother-in-law named Daniel C. PAYNE (1808-1841). Daniel PAYNE was engaged with "The Beautiful Cigar Girl" named Mary Cecilia ROGERS (1820-1841). Mary lived and worked in New York City, but her body was found mutilated and floating in Hoboken, New Jersey, on the other side of the Hudson River in 1841. Daniel was a suspect, but police soon ruled him out because he was a drunk. Mary's death became a national story in the newspapers. To this day, no one knows if Mary was murdered or if her death happened after a botched abortion attempt. Daniel drank himself to death soon after Mary's death. Edgar Allen Poe wrote "The Mystery of Marie Roget" based on Mary's mystery.

And if this lineage is correct, one of Harry's great-grandsons named Alfred Daniel PAYNE (1840-1873) married an Ebbets girl. Alfred's wife is a distant-cousin of Charles Henry "Hercules" EBBETS (1859-1925) of New York City who was the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers professional baseball team as well as their home stadium Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
