I will try and keep this as short as possible. Henry T was the son of Henry Croucher and Harriet Hart Turner, he was born c1868 in Kent. In 1894 he emigrated to the US (believed to be trying to avoid the Police) and subsequently became a US citizen. On the 1910 census he is shown as being a boarder in Pennsylvania, on the 1920 census he is shown as living in a different area of Pennsylvania with a wife Mary (from Germany) and a son George bc1903. Nowhere can I find a marriage for Henry T to Mary, neither can I find a birth for George. Also after the 1920 census they all disappear.

I would be grateful for any thoughts on this.

A Mystery to Unravel

With the help of a very good Canadian friend we have found the following information.

Henry T Croucher, born c1868 in Swanscombe, Kent, emigrated to the US (believe that the Police may have been looking for him), became a US citizen in 1894. Am sure he landed in NY, on the 1910 census he is shown as single and a boarder with the Loeb family, on the 1920 census he is shown as married to Mary (from Germany) with a son George bc1903. I think he may have married Mary Moon in NY district however cannot find a birth for George (perhaps he is not the child of Henry).

After the 1920 census they all totally disappear, any thoughts on where I can turn to next to see if anyone has them in their tree or where they might be. Family gossip also says that Henry T emigrated to the US or Australia. Thanks

Merged with duplicate.

Re: A Mystery to Unravel

I found a petition for naturalization for Henry T Croucher, but the dates are a little different from what you give. According to this:

Henry T. Croucher was born in England on 3 October, 1868. He arrived in the US on 30 April, 1894. and has resided continuously in the US since his arrival. He was living in New York City (Manhattan) at the time, employed as a barber. The petition is dated 8 Aug, 1904.

Yes sorry my error. I did find a marriage on Familysearch for Mary Moon to Henry Croucher on 28 Sep 1895 but do not know how to corroborate that. It remains a mystery where he disappeared to after 1920.

I went and looked at that marriage record; it's from something called the Swann Vital Record collection. That collection was actually made by a private individual, as government records were either not required or collected poorly at the time. It can be found on line and browsed.

On the actual record it says they were married in the town of Penn Yan, in Yates County of New York. The minister Rev. J.F. Beebe was the minister of the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Penn Yan from 1894 to 1897. That record (the image can be downloaded) might be the only marriage record available.
