Thanks. Yet another variation of the name. We have Adler too.

I'll search for Arthur in TROVE. *** 15 months old as at 30 Jun 1853 so born abt Apr 1852 but where? Listed as previous issue but not as previous issue of William DRINKWATER's first spouse so Arthur's mother is Harriet and father is not William and possibly not Samuel either. Samuel is still in Hobart as of 27 Jun 1853.

Henry William Hadlam was born on 18 March 1848 Hobart Reg No 650 .
It seems he was also registerd as Henry William Adler Reg No 3311. Parents Samuel and Harriett.

I could not find a death for Samuel or birth for Arthur."

Guess who is on the same ship

Drinkwater William Steerage Lady Bird 18 Feb 1854 Launceston Melbourne Surrey Free by servitude

Now is that Jane Drinkwater or Harriett? I have my suspicions it might be Harriett as on #13 on here Jane had William in court in July 1853 for desertion.

We jump from 1855 to 1861 so is this the same Samuel?

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1956) - Tuesday 31 December 1861 p.6
Rogues and Vagabonds.-Reuben Lewis,
William Moore, John Harrison, Thomas Apple
ford, and Samuel Adlam, were charged with,
being rogues and vagabonds

So 1861 a Samuel ADLAM age unknown is in Melbourne.

1858 Samuel ADLEM born abt 1826 married in Sydney.

A Henry ADLEM (no middle name and no age) is a witness to the 22 Aug 1867 marriage in Sydney of a sister-in-law of Samuel ADLEM.

Where are we? :2fun: Back to post #1.

It has to be Harriet with her son Arthur born abt Apr 1852 plus 3 = 4 children:

"They [= Henry and Arthur] are not listed on the birth of their first daughter Charlotte DRINKWATER born 1854 Melbourne, which lists William's children by his wife Jane HANNON in Hobart - Edward 12, Sarah 9 and William 6. " See HERE

We still don't know if the Samuel who married in Sydney in 1858 and the witness Henry in 1867 are the father Samuel and son Henry W. born in Hobart.

I'll have to search again for two marriages. If I can't find either I'll have to spend some money on certificates.

What have we missed? This:

Empire (Sydney, NSW : 1850 - 1875) - Monday 26 September 1864 p.8
Arthur A. Adlam, a boy, was brought up for stealing
eleven oranges value 1s. The boy admitted that he
stole one, only. . His father dressed him, sent him
to school, and need many means to do him good. He
had no mother.
The prosecutor not appearing, the
boy was reprimanded, and promised to go to school.
He was discharged.

Arthur is the 2nd son so his father Samuel can't be the one who married Emma in Sydney in 1858. Emma died in 1876.

We need another death reg for a Samuel. It looks as if we have one born abt 1824 and one born abt 1826.

Samuel was still in Melbourne in 1861 so that's 2 reasons why the Hobart Samuel didn't marry Emma in 1858. We know for sure the one who did marry Emma died in 1866 aged 40. So when did the one born 1824 die? - It was after 1864.

No sign of a death in NSW for another Samuel. I searched using adl?? Nothing in TROVE for a Samuel after the 1866 notices.

I can't see any children to Arthur & Ellen. I want to find that marriage.

I could not find the marriage of Henry W ADLEM to Sarah FITZPATRICK in Sydney in 1869.

I checked the films of 7 different CofE churches in Sydney city without finding it.

I need that marriage to find his mother's name.

I can't find a Samuel in England with parents James & Ann.

We have more info but we are still stuck.

It's still 2+2=5 :2fun: Something is missing.

Wednesday or Thursday next week before I can get back to the library and have another look for that 1869 marriage.

No middle name on that reg and no mother's maiden name. I still read her name as West on the marriage:

Christ Church Sydney
Arthur Alfred Adlem Bachelor Melbourne Driver of Parcel Delivery 20 Sydney Samuel Adlem Harriet West ?
Ellen Vickers Spinster Tasmania 19 Sydney Joshua Vickers Ellen (Surname unknown) ?
married in Parish Church of S. Lawrence (Christ Church) Sydney
NO DATE but next is dated Sept 15 1874 By me Edward B. Proctor
Arthur signed, Ellen her x mark
Witnesses: G. S. Hanslip, Emma (her x mark) Hanslip

I'd better look at that entry again and see if I still read it as West.
