Hi Dave,

Have you his service record from the Australian National Archives? This first page has cancelled written on it but it does a small piece of info of his previous military history.

Yes Julie, thanks.

He called himself a labourer when he enlisted in Australia.

He has stated this as his previous service:

17 years Royal Artillery India, Africa & England as Captain, No. ? & Chitral and South African Campaign
On another attestation form his previous service is written as F?HA

FTHA/FIHA - ? ? Household Artillery - possibly ?

Having no luck again. Can't be this one:

Results for Anglo-Boer War Records 1899-1902
H Brereton 6604 Private The Lancashire Fusiliers

Soldiers of the Queen in the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902

SEARCH RESULT
BRERETON, H 6604 Private Loyal North Lancashire Fusiliers WO100 Lanc. Fus. (Kevin Asplin)

That's the ony one with 'H' as first initial.

Perhaps I should give up and work on the photos from the north coast trip.

A few articles relating to the charge, one large article named FORMER CAPTAIN'S DOWNFALL mentions this....
"Brereton had held a position in the police in India, and his father held a very high position in the Indian Army, and his uncles and other relatives held high positions in the Army."

"Hi fred,
not sure how much success you have had with Henry Willoughby BRERETON, since your message is dated from may 09. In case you dont have it, i did a search of army records with India office and have found the following

Willoughby Thomas b 15 Jun & bap 1 Aug 1838, Steeple Morden, Cambs, son of Rev Thomas & Louisa Milbourn.

He married m Mary Louisa Beaumont on 15 Sep 1864. She was born 27 Nov 1836, d 28; May 1893.

Willoughby and Mary had the following children

Thomas Willoughby Selby b 1 Jul 1865, d 19 May 1867;
Henry Willoughby b 14 Apr 1867;
Mary Louisa Annie b 2 Nov 1868, m 29 Oct 1904;
Ada Margaret b 21 Sep 1871, d; 24 Mar 1872;
Charles William Francis b 1 Aug 1874, d 8 May 1875

In 1883 Willoghby was a colonel in the british army in madras, India. It is possible that some or all of his children were born in india.
hope this helps."

And another...

"Hello ng2688,

Thank you for your reply.

I've been off line for a few weeks. I moved from one country to another and it took ages to ship my computer and to arrange a new internet connection.

I had some but not all of the children.

Captains in the Madras Staff Corps from Hart's Army List, 1873.
