Yes, thanks.

Elsie was born in Bendigo but that does not help either. And brother William in Carlton.

Post #7 the will rupert posted. Do we know who Edith Germayne Maddocks is?

I can't find any reference to Edith Germayne Maddocks.

If you thought the Will was odd it does get stranger.

The Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954)
Friday 20 October 1950

GREENWOOD, Herbert (John). - On
October 18, 1950, at his residence,
Lindfield, Sydney, dear husband of
Edith Greenwood (nee Maddocks).

Edith was from Tasmania which might explain why Herbert's death was advertised in The Mercury.

Death notice for Ediths' sister
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/26714803?

Yeah i know, way off track but this is a interesting family. I still cant find anything on the Morris family.

Edith Germayne Maddocks was born Emma Jane Maddox to Charles & Emma Maddox, Macquarie Plains, Tasmania on 15th October 1886.
She was one of 18 siblings and was my grand aunt. That's the easy part, how she found her way to NSW and in what capacity her relationship with Herbert Greenwood took, remains a mystery. When, where and why she changed her name also remains a mystery.

Hi Dave, thank you for the reply.
It was only for google search that I found "Edith's" name at all as all other attempts to confirm her details as Edith have eluded me.
I do have a hand written letter from "Edith" to the Medical Superintendant of New Town infirmary, Hobart enquiring about the well being of her brother Abel Maddox who was an inmate at the time. This letter was written on 11th January 1943 and is signed Edith Greenwood, 109 Middle H Road, Lindfield.
This letter along with various family obituaries confirms Edith was the sister of Abel Maddox. Although numerous documents relating to her siblings have had varying spellings of the name Maddox (Maddocks and Maddock) it doesn't explain why she spells her brother's name with the usual spelling of Maddox and her own name as Maddocks particularly in light of her referring to herself as Edith Greenwood.
In Herbert Greenwood's Will of 1947 he leaves an annuity of £52 to her as Edith Germayne Maddocks, who is referred to as ' no relation'.
Interestingly there is no reference to the property at 109 Middle Harbour Road, Lindfield in his Willing.
I have not found any evidence that Herbert or Edith ever married or had children together. There was a 21 year age difference between them so perhaps she was a live in mistress who adopted his surname.
I cannot make any sense of why but would love to know when she changed her name from Emma Jane Maddox to Edith Germayne Maddocks.
Again I can confirm 100% that they are the same person but there is much to do in filling in the blanks between 1886 and 1943.
Cheers
Peter

Hi Peter,

Thanks for that. Always good to have something more than just a birth, marriage and death records and perhaps electoral roll and something in newspapers, even if it creates a puzzle that take ages to solve, if at all.

I'll check that address in Lindfield against something in my tree.

Dave
