Hi, My name is Alan. I first started tracing my family tree over 25 years ago but it all went on hold due to another time consuming pastime. I have recently revisited the past, and am looking forward to posting once I have fully collated and reviewed my research so far. My immediate research will be the surnames of my parents MAIDMENT (Somerset then Cardiff) and MAHONEY (Monmouth, Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff). Other surnames I will be researching will be MORRIS (Chester/Cardiff), PERKINS (Aberavon/Neath), VILE (Langport/Somerset) and BALCH (Batcombe/Somerset). Thanks for reading.

Sounds very much like myself Alan. At one stage I was totally overtaken by researching my ancestors and like you, I walked away from it:oops:

It is a very different hobby than what it was years ago! Nowadays people find names, DOB, Marriages, Deaths and all manner of things on the internet - but do NOT check the facts correctly, do not validate their research, by getting official documents to back up their research.

I'm rambling now.....
As Steve says, and browse our forums and post your queries in the most relevant.

You are correct about it being different these days. When I first started I was living a stones throw from London so was able to visit GRO easily. However, that is nearly all the tools we had and it could be so laborious and time consuming. I have recently been going through some of my paperwork/ certificates etc and have realized a few errors that I have made which could have channeled me in the wrong direction if I had continued at the time. My excuse was that I had a high pressure job and couldn't commit in the way necessary. The best way is to allocate several hours at a time so there is no need to rush. Yes it is important to back up what you glean online with the certificates. I have had a few golden nuggets by taking note of such things as given witnesses on marriage cerificates. Who's rambling now then!

Hi Alan, this may come as a bit of a shock but I have some photos which may be of interest to you - your great grandad and great grandma. I live in Cardiff. Please reply.

Hi ?, Thank you for being in touch. From your surname would I be correct in assuming that you may be referring to my great grandparents John Edgar Maidment and his wife Ada Elizabeth Maidment (born Morris)? john Edgar died at a young age, and Ada then remarried Lewis Bristow. They later divorced, and Lewis married Ada's daughter May. Ada's son (also called Lewis) used to keep in touch with my father.

I was more surprised than shocked to get your message. However, it has been very welcome. I have a couple of photos of Ada and one of them also includes her son Lewis. I have no photos of my grandfather John Edgar Maidment so it would make my day if you were now to tell me you have such photos. Funnily enough I was talking to my Uncle Len today (who is 90) and mentioned Ada.

It would be great to hear more from you as how we may be connected. You can contact me on the following e-mail address....(Removed by moderator. Contact by the 'Start Conversaton' facility, via clicking username) I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,

Alan.

EDIT: Email Address. Removed by Steve.(P.Risboy - Moderator).

Please accept my apologies. I realized after posting that I was not supposed to give out my e-mail address. I did go back to the post hoping that I would be able to edit it out but there was not that function available.
