Hi Emma, welcome to the forum 
The best advice I can give you is to start with what you know and start your tree with that, always start with yourself. There are a few good sites on the net for family history research, if you 'google' you'll be able to judge the best one for you.
In the meantime, have a look around the various forums as there are some very good tips on here. If you'd like any help please post your query in the relevant forum, we'll do our best!
