This is my first time on Family history...I have been researching my family tree for about six months and have become a family history junkie. I am also a member of Ancestry, filled in a few branches on the tree and met a couple of new distant cousins on the way.

I am now getting more and more brickwalls.. So hoping that this site maybe able to help me.

My main problem now is how to research the Irish ancestors... Who unhelpfully only put Ireland on their census returns.

I have a William MCCARTHY, tailor, born Ireland abt1846. I followed him back through the census from his death in 1894 to1871, His mother also born Ireland was Johanna (b. abt 1823)he was married to an Annie(b.abt 1848 born St Giles London, tailoress, I think I may have found their marriage in 1864 in the BMD index which would make Annie surname RICHARDSON, On his daughters birth certificate he is down as William.....no middle names are given
But really don’t know how to proceed from here. Family stories are that the Mccarthy’s come from Cork!! but, I have no evidence ......Any suggestions???

Many thanks
