High Oakland Barracks

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could tell me anything about High Oakland Barracks in Mansfield. My GGG Grandfather Edward Crickmore is listed on the 1851 census (recorded on the census as Cuclmore) as being there at the time, he was a Soldier in the Royal Dragoons and was staying at the Barracks with his family at the time but I can't seem to find any information on it.

Hi Nari,

The Royal Dragoons merged with the Royal Horse Guards in 1969 to become the "Blues and Royals".

They have a museum in Central London, the email address for general enquiries is:-

Since the 60's there have been so many mergers within the UK regiments, it is my belief that the Barracks in Mansfield was closed some years ago. However, as in my own former Regiment, places where they served/stationed is often mentioned in history books that have been published. I do not know if they have that information, but you could try them.

Hi Nari,

The barracks at Mansfield could well have closed many years ago. There have been so many mergers of all regiments since the 60's, a lot of these places have been sold off for development, and that is still the case today.

However, the Royal Dragoons became part of the "Blues and Royals" in 1969, they have a museum in Central London. You could try to email there :-

Like my regiment, they may, just may, have a list of where the Dragoons served since formation - they do have a long-standing reputation within the military.

Thankyou everyone for your help, really appreciate it, Edward served 23 years with the Dragoons which at some point even had him posted in Ireland which is where he met his wife, they had 5 children all born in different areas, Carlisle Castle in Cumberland and Sheffield Barracks where another two so the family moved about quite a lot, will definitely follow up with the museum to see if I can find out anything further, thankyou for the link and for your time.
