Hi
I have been researching my mother's maternal line of Hill and come up to a brick wall with my gt x 4 grandfather George Hill b @ 1809 (don't know where), he is supposed to have married Betty Hill and had my gt x 3 grandfather JAMES HILL b @ 1840 (census says Stockport but I am unsure about this), James, married Margaret Burrows and lived in Burnley. I have spent 5 years looking for George Hill and have now been informed through another family member that (all this info has been passed down through another branch of the Hill family until the present day) George was not George Hill and that his name was actually George Powers and seemingly there was some trouble with the police of that day, and when he married he took his wifes surname i.e. Hill. Is anyone out there researching the Hill family from Burnley, if so have anyone any idea if this story is actually true, maybe someone has even found George Powers?????
Take care
