Hello !

A newbie member, to FHUK.

Going to try to do a bit of researching of a family member on my husbands side...
We don't have a lot of information but we would love to see if we can somehow one day find him.

Our man is:
Benjamin Harton born approx 1814 in Leeds we think.
Died 1871 aged 57 in Victoria Australia
His parents names possibly James & Esther

The story handed down Benjamin left Britain, immigrated or as a convict (unknown) and spent his early years approx 13 years in Tasmania. Then landed on the mainland of Australia in the state of Victoria. We have not been able to find anything to confirm this information.

Benjamin married Pheobe Dale 1852 in Victoria
A Ship named the Palmera departed Plymouth 14 April 1848 and arrived Port Philip Bay Australia 19 July 1848 had a Phebe Dale aged 15 yrs travelling with a brother James and father William.

Benjamin and Pheobe had one child : William ( William Benjamin) born 1857, Victoria Australia

Benjamin and Phebe separated

Benjamin had a relationship with a Eliza Lewis they had 4 children all born in Victoria Australia
Esther born 1864
Thomas born1866
Emma born1868
Henrietta born 1873

We have been able to find some information about Benjamin in Australia but we have not been able to find out how Benjamin got to Australia/Tasmania and no details of his birth or parents in Britain....

So time to start my hunt.....

:)

A Benjamin Hanton (sic) age 20 was tried for larceny at the Old Bailey in Oct 1834 and sentenced to 7 years transportation. No further details given and the name is quite clearly Hanton not Harton but there is a slight chance he is your man.

Will keep looking - good luck!

May not be your man.

Benjamin Hanton was tried 16 Oct 1834 for stealing a watch, sent to be held on the Prison Hulk Fortitude and was "disposed of" to NSW on 16 March 1835. The prisoners were either sent to NSW or VDL ( Van Diemen's Land, Tasmania) so this prisoner apparently did not go to Tasmania. Also his name still clearly spelt Hanton.

Sorry, Benjamin Hanton is a red herring The proceedings of the Old Bailey are on-line and he was the son of a widow, Mary Hanton, living in London. He stole the watch off her and also stole from his sister Martha.

Nothing at all to do with James & Esther of Leeds. Pity!

Hi Elaine,

Thanks for checking it out for me.... "disposed of" that sounds terrible doesn't it...

Hello there just came across your post re benjamin harton.

Ben is my great x2 grandfather. His daughter henrietta is my great grandmother.

Im not sure of his early history from what i know his 1st wife Pheobe died and then he married Eliza Lewis Clarke (she was married before) in approx 1864 in Dunolly victoria

Ben died approx 1871 in Dunolly victoria im not sure we he is buried Dunolly maybe

Think eliza & ben had more than 4 kids. I know of 7 (arthur petherbridge, esther, james, thomas, emma, charles and henrietta.

Eliza died at approx 35

Eliza is buried under Eliza Olsen at the tarnagulla cemetary in victoria (under her 3rd husbands surname)

Henrietta married by great grandfather Albert Edward Maunder Jr in 1897

Hope this helps
