Looking for birth records for the mother of my great great grandfather Henry Hook 1853 , on the 1901 census states he was born In London, and 1911 census Ashford, kent.
On his marriage certificate to Caroline Jane Hewitt in 1892 states he was 39 and his father was John Hook deceased, and married at the chapel, new road, Stourbridge.

Searching the GRO, doesn't give that many results, about 20. Filtering out the obvious ones, you may need to purchase several. There are around 6 to 8 that may fit.

He also could have been illegtimate, which would not show his mothers maiden name in the GRO.

Quite often, if someone is illegitimate, you will find a father's name on a marriage certificate. Usually it's not their father but a made up person to save face in front of the spouse's family.

Thankyou for your reply, I never knew this, looks like I may be at another brick wall, :(
It's not a brickwall yet. :)

It just means you'll need to spend more money. A number of certs maybe required.
Do you have his mothers name, or haven't you found him before the 1901 census.

His mother may have remarried just after he was born, and he may well be under his step fathers name.

Theres a Henry Hook on the 1861 census. Born Barking Essex, estimated year of birth 1854. Living with grandparents William and Esther Briggs at Love Lane, London City. Not been able to find a connection between Briggs and Hook.

No I don’t have his mothers name, only his father John Hook.

If you're serious about carrying the Hook family back further, you will have to bite the bullet, and buy some PDF birth certs. if nothing else works out.

It took 17 for my Great Grandfather, and that was before the PDF certs. So that was about £140 - £150 for me.

Keep us informed of your progress, and hopefully of your success.:)

Good luck, and good hunting.O0

Still no luck on my Henry birth certificate, I do now have a birthdate 16th February 1853, which I obtained from a cousin I found on ancestry, but unfortunately she had no information on his mother, so my hunt goes on,
Carmen.

Probably no relation whatsoever, but a Private Hook won the VC in 1879 and without looking through my files for confirmation, I think his name was Henry but he is buried somewhere in Gloucestershire. I'm known for useless information, so apologies as I know a lot about brick walls and don't wish to sidetrack your research.

I know my Henry is buried at lodgehill cemetary Birmingham, and died on the 19th Feb 1923, I just can’t find any birth details, without his mothers name, it’s very difficult,

You are not on your own, after over 10 years of research, my cousin and I have failed to find the birth certificate of my maternal grandfather, and the good people on here didn't either.

Brick Walls - be glad you don't have Davies, Evans, and all the other common names.

Good luck.
