House numbers

This must be a really easy question for someone out there to answer!

Can anyone tell me how you can work out an actual house number from the census records? A lot of my family came from Hexham and I am looking at going up there shortly. I would like to take some photo's of the houses they lived at but the census records only seem to show the schedule number.

I would firstly look on google street view and see if the road is still there, and the houses are of an age, that represents their age in the census.

I would try and pinpoint any shops or pubs in the streets in the census as well, and hopefully they can get you nearer.

But house numberings have been known to change over the years, but you should get close if they still exist.

There maybe electoral rolls for your rellies, which may give the house number.

Or even a birth certificate might give a house number.

Also, there maybe families living in the houses in the latest available 1911 census, which may give a house number.

The 1891 & 1901 Census gave house numbers as does the back of the 1911 return.
In earlier census the house may often be located by using the enumerator's route (given at the start of the return) coupled with public houses, and other recognisable properties on the route.

You need to be careful where the houses are numbered with odd on one side and even numbers on the other the schedules go down one side then cross and go back along the other as that is the order the houses were done in.

the road I am living in currently has been renumbered at least twice it is a cul-de-sac which is numbered sequentially down one side and back up the other.

The earliest part was built in the early 1950's then extended later in the 1950's and the last section was added in the 1960's. so a lot of renumbering of the houses over a comparatively short period of time.
